John couldn’t take care of Rosie all by himself. He felt like a failure for it, but the fact of the matter was he just couldn’t do it all. He had to work so that he could take care of both of them, and he had so much to deal with between grief and Sherlock. It was all just a disaster. On top of it all he couldn’t find a nanny that he liked and could be there at all the times he needed her to be, sometimes on short notice (thanks to Sherlock). So in the end he had help. Everyone he knew ended up babysitting at some point. Everyone.

Warning: I'm sticking very close to the series' timeline in this fic. There won't be too many spoilers as the action happens at a later date. But for those who have not seen the series and are relying on fanon, note that this means that Duo and Wufei have NOT spent all that much time together during the war, and no, the boys never found themselves playing 'house' in one of Quatre's legendary mansions for months, or all hiding out in the same school or anything. EW didn't happen though (I sometimes wish EW had never happened in the real world, either... )

Post-war worldbuilding. Freeport is what happens when a prison colony with a generous helping of anarchists is left to survive or die on its own. Last refuge for criminals and refugees alike it's in no way gentle but the system has been self-sustaining. Duo smuggles Wufei in in pursuit of a murderer. The case, and Freeport, and both twenty somethings with a lot of baggage from the war and before, are all much more complicated than they seem.
