Summary
In the midst of capturing a magical creature, Merlin is transported to a world where Camelot is home to thousands of magic-users. King Uther is nowhere to be found, Arthur is a prince again, and Queen Ygraine sits on the throne.
Merlin plans to get back to his own reality, to his own Camelot. To do that, however, he must have access to information that is inside a shielded castle protected by powerful sorcerers. The only way in is to participate in the Apprentice Exam and be an apprentice to a magic-user included in Camelot's court. Should be easy . . . right?
Conspiracies are afoot and Merlin just knows that, somehow, he is or will be involved. Just his luck.

Arthur could see his father glaring down - face red and eyes narrowed as he looked at Merlin with clear distaste.
"Once this over, sorcerer...I’ll burn you."
"You’ve already tried that," Merlin’s voice answered and Arthur had to bite his fist to keep from making any noise. “You need to accept you can’t kill me… Hand me that blanket, please.”
“I’m sure there must be some method… Beheading?”
“No, we tried that.”
“Hanging?”
“I just sort of... Swung there, remember?”
There was another pause.
“I should have made you keep that dragon below the castle so I could feed you to it.”
“Kilgharrah? He won’t eat me, but if you want to torture me than making me listen to his nonsense for an hour might do it.” Merlin said and there was a soft sigh from the other end of the room. “I’m glad you agreed to help me though. Usually I have to do the grunt work of saving Arthur myself.”
“I can’t wait to kill you.”
Or
Uther finds out about Merlin’s magic, but can’t seem to kill him. Merlin is just trying to protect Arthur. They become a begrudgingly effective duo. Arthur doesn't understand why they think he isn't noticing this.

Summary
Soulmates were not uncommon in this day and age; people knew about them and expected them. They could even long for them, since a vast majority of them met soon into their teens or early adult life. The way they knew who was their soulmate could vary: first words they would say to you branded somewhere on your body, only seeing in black and white until you touched each other, hearing the song they were singing in your head, etc. It was easier for some to find their other halves when it was a physical mark, but even then, it could be tricky for both parties to understand they were soulmates.
Take Merlin, for example.
Merlin knew whose Song was written on his skin.Doesn’t mean it didn’t break his heart knowing the person it belonged to would never hear it.

Lance watches the blood well up from the scrape on Hunks knee. She stares for a long moment, swipes her thumb along the wound, and then sticks the bloody appendage in her mouth.
Hunk watches her with resigned eyes.
"You aren't developing a taste for blood, are you?"
"I can't develop something I already had, sugarplum," Lance says brightly. She leans down and licks his knee all along the cut, humming happily at the taste.
The two of them watch as the cut closes before their eyes.
"I feel like I should be more concerned about this,” Hunk says, not sounding at all concerned. “This is very not normal. Like, delving into concerning levels of how not normal this is."
Lance wrinkles her nose. "Normal is boring. And you live for my weird flair. Keeps you entertained."
