There are strange machines that sit untouched in the middle of the streets. Kaveh had passed them many times, and for each passing his curiosity had only grown. They were large, looming monuments. They bore the marks of weathering from the natural elements, but no such hint of human touch despite their clearly man made nature. As if the metal were organic, it sprouts from the roads wholly indifferent to the destruction surrounding it. They sit, silent and waiting.
Aria’s mother, Ava, had only told Kaveh that they were some kind of Sarkaz weapon, though this was only an approximation. Before her passing, Ava had left him with a warning to never approach those machines: “There is nothing of value to be learned from those things. It is best to leave their secrets within to suffocate and die.”
To be discovered tampering with Khaenri’ahn weapons was grounds for a lifetime exile in Sumeru. Kaveh ponders this as he stands before a contraption unlike anything he’d ever seen in Teyvat, and reaches his hands down into its guts once more.
Life in Terra is much harder than life in Teyvat, and Kaveh learns to hold onto hope with bloodied fists.
