His wellness check doesn’t come in the form of burly men with guns, demanding he put his hands up while they pin him to the wall and deem him a danger to himself or others. It comes in the form of a six foot even, doe-eyed boy in a Metros pullover, freshly showered hair still damp at the ends, and worry dotting his face like the freckles across his nose. He looks angry, too, like Ilya might still find himself against the nearest wall, and not in the fun way.

“Gil—” J.J. says, but Shane doesn’t want him to finish that sentence, to pull Comeau gently off the ledge he’s steering himself toward. Shane wants to push him, kicking and screaming, to make them say it to his fucking face. That after all this time, they still hate him for the heinous crime of falling in love.
“We’ve been married for two years,” Shane says. “I’m not sure that qualifies as playing house. I mean, it’s longer than you were with your first wife, isn’t it?”

“Mm. Wait-” Ilya said under his breath, breaking the kiss to remove his earbuds and pause the music that was still playing.
“What were you listening to?” Shane asked softly, placing his other hand on the back of Ilya’s neck.
“Ah- uhm, nothing,” Ilya blurted out a bit too quickly and a bit too loudly. Shane looked at him quizzically, but before he had time to figure out what was happening, Ilya went in for another kiss. This time, Shane was the one to break away.
“Ilya, tell me,” he giggled quietly.
“I told you, is nothing. Now kiss me some more,” he said, trying to shut Shane up.
“Ah ah ah,” Shane scolded playfully, wagging a finger and taking a step back, “not unless you tell me what you were listening to.” Ilya felt warmth creep across his cheeks, and he silently prayed that Shane wouldn’t notice. He noticed immediately, though, because of course he did. “Oh my god, are you embarrassed?!” Shane let out a loud, exasperated laugh. “You’ve gotta be kidding me. Ilya, we’re married. What could you possibly be listening to that you would be embarrassed to tell me about? What, is it Shake It Off?” He grinned playfully.
