What Joe gets at 8:30 on a Monday morning is Ellis Leslie pulling up to the Home Office in a spotless black Maybach with an escort car both in front of and behind him. It’s so beyond what Joe expects that he doesn’t realize who gets out of the car at first in a sleek dark grey suit with a pair of sunglasses on and a half-burned cigarette balanced between his fingers.
He’s talking to someone on his phone pressed tightly to his ear as well, and Joe has to bite the inside of his cheek to keep himself from making any kind of comment to the other officer next to him. Ellis Leslie is decidedly not a man of the people.
Or: Lieutenant Joe Blake of the Metropolitan Police Force gets reassigned to the head of Security Minister Ellis Leslie's private security team. Things quickly devolve from there.

Will wants to scream. Blake’s bullheadedness was going to get them fucking killed. They needed to think this through—needed to plan and prepare. They had time, if only Blake wasn’t so dead-set on barreling them headfirst into danger.
It was no use, Blake wasn’t going to listen to him—not with his brother on the line. Will let’s out a shaky breath, resigning himself to what lay ahead. All he could do was try and keep the boy safe. And he would, no matter what it took.
(Will is psychic. It makes a difference that day.)

Alright, so Tom Blake is a gambler, but he only bets on things that he’s sure will produce lucrative returns. Like now, for instance: he’s engaged in a game of poker for the low entry fee of a few pounds where one of the prizes currently in the pot is two third-class tickets aboard the Titanic. The ship leaves for New York in about two hours. He has nothing but a week and a half’s worth of pay in the pot in exchange for the chance at a new life.
Or: a self-indulgent Titanic AU with all the yearning and angst but with none of the tragic death

The time in the job listing had read 9:00, though his watch says 9:30. Outside the cottage with him is another boy, maybe two or three years younger than himself. There’s not much to make of him other than that he’s shorter than Will and has wavy dark hair. It looks haphazardly styled, almost like he doesn’t quite know what he’s doing judging by the frequency of attempts to brush it out of his face.

Nothing about Tom Blake should take Will’s breath away, and yet here he is, breathless as he looks at the younger boy in the bright Paris sunshine, eyes sparkling with the biggest grin on his face that Will’s seen yet.

He doesn't speak to his daughters on his way to bed, simply kisses their foreheads and slips back out. He knows he is like a ghost haunting their lives.
When he reaches his own bedroom door, he has the intense fear that he will open the door to find Blake there in his bed, limp and bloody. He has the irrational urge to go back outside and find somewhere cool and damp to sleep.
