For many long years Merlin waited.

“What are you doing?” Merlin asked, sounding tired. “The war is over. Magic is no longer banned. Take your men and go home. Live your lives in peace.”
“There can be no peace so long as that castle stands!” the sorcerer yelled.
Merlin ignored him, addressing the three others by his side instead. “This isn’t what magic is for. You know it isn't. If you listen to people like him, you will be driven into the same darkness that forced me to end Morgana’s life. Is that really what you want?”
The three men glanced at each other.
Uncertain, Gwen thought.
The sorcerer in black let out a yell, and thrust his arm forward, a fireball flying from his hand.
Merlin barely spared it a glance.

SUMMARY:
A year after Arthur's death, and magic is permitted once again in Camelot. But Uther's legacy lives long, and many want revenge for his crimes, now with magic at their disposal.

“Have I ever been a good manservant?” Merlin asked, because he couldn’t very well say ask me for something else and see what I wouldn’t give to you. It should have been more insulting that this of all things was what finally made Arthur relax.
Merlin confuses a typical favor with one of the gift-giving, courtly variety when Camelot hosts a winter tournament. Arthur tries his hand at courtship.

I don’t care how long it takes, I don’t care what my father or anyone else has to say about it. I won’t—I can’t give this up. I can’t, and you don’t have to believe me now, but at least give me a chance to prove it.”

Some things, though, he wishes he did not have to discover if only for Arthur not having to bear them in the first place.
Five times Merlin learns something about Arthur that no one else knows, and one time Arthur proves that he has been watching Merlin just as closely.

Summary
Arthur has always known that Merlin is keeping secrets.
He has known it when Merlin stood up to him in a marketplace, eyes full of defiance and not a shred of fear to be found. He has known it when Merlin swung a mace at him even though it was clear that he had never handled one before, refusing to cower before anyone, prince or not. He has known it when Uther had made Merlin his servant, and Merlin looked as if he would walk out of Camelot right then and there.
From the first day they’ve met, Arthur never wanted anything more than for Merlin to consider him worthy of each and every part of him.
Sometimes, you love despite, not because. Sometimes, finding out does not change anything.

“Oh, you—” Merlin says, pinching the bridge of his nose; it is solely for the sake of hiding his smile, Arthur can tell. “Of course, I’m not mad, Arthur. This is very stupid, but it is also very, very sweet which makes it, conveniently, very you. A little bird whispered to me that, unfortunately, I might be slightly fond of that.”
August days, a stealthy plan to make sure that for once, Merlin will take a break, and the heaviness of memory that tends to come with late summer days. Arthur wouldn't change it for the world.

Summary

It is everything Merlin can do not to laugh, hysteria gathering in the hollows of his teeth; of course, this is the scar that Arthur would ask about first. “No. Ask about another one.”
An attack gone wrong leaves Merlin and Arthur stuck in each other's bodies. While Merlin thinks the most complicated part is that Arthur ends up with his magic, it does not take long until he is reminded that it can always, always get worse.

Summary
She’d laugh every time they hit him. That’s what he remembers, later.
He also remembers her pouring antiseptic on his knuckles, her pressing plasters over his cuts. The birthday she’d come to his room, long after the others had already fallen asleep, with small presents she’d hidden for him. The cookbook she smuggled into their mansion when their mother fell sick, so he could bake for her. The backdoor key she copied for him in his teenage years, when he finally found friends, when he had something to sneak out for.
She’d laugh every time they hit him, but she’d stay afterwards, too. Lead him to her bedroom, hand in hand, hide him there for a brief respite. “You’re always winding them up,” she would say, sitting him down on her bed. His cheeks would be swollen with bruises and she would watch him, still as the surface of a lake.

Aithusa might have been no bigger than a house cat but she was still a dragon. That meant wings, claws, and her own personal hoard, which in Aithusa’s case included soft pillows, fluffy socks, and much to Merlin’s chagrin, stolen pants. When Merlin found out that his winged ward had stolen a rather considerable pile of clothing for her hoard, he thought that it would be the end of any kind of friendship with his neighbor. But when Merlin met the victim of Aithusa’s burglary, he was pleasantly surprised to find Arthur, a man who had never in his life seen a dragon let alone a burglarizing one, and Cavall, a curious German Shepherd puppy who was quick to befriend the little white dragon. From there, it was only the beginning.

The body of a Prince was not like anyone’s. His hand only ever held others in a firm handshake, and rarely without gloves. Sometimes he would raise the delicate hands of noble ladies to his lips for a brief kiss, but it was all out of propriety. He rarely touched others, but what was even rarer was others touching him. The only ones who dared were his knights, and even they only smacked his shoulder or patted his back in friendly roughhousing. Gripping each other’s arms before battle was the most heartfelt touch they exchanged. Lingering soft touches were not done. Any lingering touch on his person could be interpreted as political movements. After all, Arthur’s body wasn’t his own. It never had been. He was Camelot’s first and foremost. Even above his own needs and wants.
