“What?”
“You’re wondering how long I have before I die,” Eddie explains. How did he— “Twenty four hours since that thing snapped on me, more or less. That’s what the army handbook said. For wounds like this, considering the risk of infection and all that.”
“You had a section on bear traps?”
“Okay, it was the boy scouts,” Eddie admits, his smile easing some of the anxiety in Buck’s stomach.Or: Eddie gets hurt on the road trip back from Nashville. Buck has twenty-four hours to save him.

“You miss me that bad that you needed to pretend you wanted ice?” Eddie asks.
Buck is leaning against the ice machine and balancing the bucket on his hip. “Yeah, because this little clandestine meeting was my idea.”
“I’m just making sure my water is cold. You want me to drink warm water?”
“Far be it from me to deny Eddie Diaz anything he wants.”
Buck and Eddie end up at a motel on their drive back from Nashville and spill all their romantic secrets.

“I’m still a firefighter,” Eddie says adamantly. “That hasn’t changed.”
“But you have,” Buck counters. “You used to be the one who talked sense into me. You were the guy who made me think twice. But since you got back from Texas, you’re the one being stupid and reckless. Running into fires against orders, diving off fifty foot bridges--”
“You know, you’re such a hypocrite,” Eddie steps forward, jabbing an accusatory finger into Buck’s chest. “You would have done exactly the same thing if I hadn’t done it first.”
OR: Buck confronts Eddie about his recent recklesness.

The words fly out of Buck's mouth before he can stop them, "I can't be your first!"
That finally shuts Eddie up. He's quiet for a moment, frowning at Buck. "What?"
Buck takes the exit that the GPS tells him to. He can see the motel down the road.
"I can't be your first. I just can't. It would—" Buck shakes his head, "I'm sorry, Eddie. I can't be the first queer person you date."
Eddie's brows are furrowed, the way they get when he's tittering between angry and confused. Hurt.
"Buck…" Eddie starts, "That's rid—"

Summary
He should be glad of it. He doesn’t want people to know he’s struggling, and they don’t. But why doesn’t Buck know? He’s always known, always seen through Eddie’s carefully constructed walls and carved himself a door into them. Even when Eddie resisted, even when he pushed back, Buck ducked his head and shoved through and found the tender hurt Eddie was guarding, cupped his hands around it and held until it didn’t ache so much.
And now Eddie’s bleeding internally, swollen with regret, and Buck doesn’t say a thing. Eddie can’t ask him to. If he opens his mouth, he might just start screaming.
~
There's distance between Eddie and Buck. Eddie isn't falling apart. These are two equally true statements.

That was good, right? Alex, smiling. Eddie was so out of practice in this sort of thing. And even when he had been in practice, he was a disaster at flirting and dating and not having a mental breakdown at the mere idea of commitment. But Alex was smiling at him and joking with him and she hadn’t run off screaming. Yet.
That was as good an omen as anything.
Eddie mustered up all his courage. “Would you like to get dinner with me?”

“Would you fire me?” Eddie follows up, because now he’s burning with desire to know. “If you were captain and I pulled something like that?”
“I would never fire you.”
“Why not?” Eddie folds his arms and quirks an eyebrow. “What about the chain of comm—”
“If you say chain of command, I will crash the car,” Buck interjects.
908 coda. Eddie stops keeping some secrets of his own, he and Buck talk, and Eddie discovers that fear may very well be the thief of joy.

He sighs, frustrated, with the world, with himself, with the stupid, mediocre beer he’s drinking that cost him twelve damn dollars, before tip even.
“The club isn’t the problem,” Eddie mumbles, staring across the dance floor, where Buck is curving his hand around the woman’s head and whispering in her ear.
“Is the problem that your wingman is a traitor?” Ravi asks, snickering at the sight.
“No. The problem is I don’t want to pick up women.” Eddie really hopes that’s enough information. Ravi is a smart guy. He kind of hopes he’ll piece it together. Though another part of him, a soft, new part of him, hopes Ravi doesn’t. He hopes he has to say it. He should probably get some practice in, right?
Ravi looks at him then, studying him. “You’re really happy being single?”
Eddie exhales. Smiles small and shakes his head.
“No, it’s not that,” he says. “I’m just gay.”
OR Eddie comes out at the club during 9x07. Just not to Buck.

Ravi presses his tongue to the inside of his cheek nervously, and Eddie already knows what the question is going to be before it even leaves his mouth.

Or: After clocking Eddie on their big night out, Ravi confronts him about the real reasons for his odd behavior.

Summary
Eventually, so soft that Buck almost misses it, Eddie says, “We could kiss.”
The words hit Buck like a freight train. All he can hear ringing on repeat in his head is Maddie’s voice telling him it wouldn’t be so crazy.
But Buck can’t be in love with Eddie.
And Eddie isn’t in love with him.
“Uh, what?” Buck coughs.
Eddie shrugs, his eyes dance around the air. “I mean, I also haven’t kissed anyone on New Year’s in… God— honestly, it feels like forever. It could be nice.”
Buck gulps. He has to manually tell his body to breathe. “It could be nice? Kissing me would be nice?”
“Yeah, could be,” Eddie says, shakily. He finally looks back up at Buck, his gaze afraid.
OR: Buck and Eddie kiss at midnight, but it’s not entirely platonic.
