Summary
Samira let out a long, unsteady breath and waved a hand toward him, her gesture broad and a little helpless. “You’re tough,” she said softly, almost a whisper. “Things like this don’t bother you.”
Jack almost laughed at that. He wanted to wrap his arms around her and then break apart there; tell her the truth - that the only reason that he didn’t seem bothered was that he was little more than an exceptional liar. That military service hadn’t hardened him so much as granted him a PhD in emotional concealment and then PTSD as a final, bitter parting gift. For all the trauma, death and pain he’d endured, it had only taught him how to keep his face still, but never brought him any closer to immunity.
-
Set over the span of a year, Jack and Samira simultaneously find ways to cope with life and work after the mass casualty.

He stops briefly, pulls away to inspect his thumb before ripping off the piece of skin once and for all. A piercing cry snaps his attention and his heart lurches forward, body moving on autopilot. Summary
It was a quiet night shift for Jack and as long as no one said it out loud, it looked like it would stay that way until they had to swap to day shift.
A few drunk injuries, a mother with an oil burn, a young girl with a simple head bump and a young adult, suspected drug overdose.
He couldn't wait to get home, take off his leg and go to sleep with the TV buzzing in the background, waiting for Robby to come back from the day shift for their day off together.
Ideas of sleep slipped out of his mind however, when he flipped open the curtain and saw who exactly was sitting in that bed. -

-
“I know you grew up on a farm but you’re not really what I expected.”
“Oh yea! And what did you expect.” The young doctor said.
“I don’t know, I knew you were a farm boy, but I thought you were more runt of the litter I guess… sorry that’s mean, I don’t know more hang out with the animals, pet the cows, I guess. I didn’t expect you to be like a real cowboy, hat and all. I don’t know… sorry.” Robby could feel his face was turning red.
“No I get it, and I was… you know runt of the litter, at least till I got into barrel racing, I was better than my brothers, really the only thing I was better at, so after that they let me help out more, then I became more cowboy I guess, rather than farm boy.” Dennis said.
“So, what do you think of cowboys?” He said after a minute, looking at Robby with that fuckass grin again. He didn’t even hesitate.
“I really like them… Haven’t seen one that wasn’t hot as shit.” He said sipping his beer.

Summary
Dennis Whitaker has lived a life full of religious speculation, pain, and chronic depression/anxiety. Growing up the youngest of four in Broken Bow, Nebraska led him into early childhood trauma. In a town that could be dated back to the late 1800's, and hardly had even changed since then, there wasn’t much room for Dennis to become anything other than what his parents wanted him to be, a rancher, just like the rest of his brothers, and his father. When the opportunity to study Theology in college arises, Dennis agrees. A year into his studies, Dennis changes his major to medicine without anyone knowing. When his family receives a letter in the mail stating that Dennis changed his major, he is given two choices. Drop out and accept his godforsaken fate in Nebraska, or leave indefinitely. Choosing the latter, Dennis finds himself homeless while studying medicine. He doesn't let this deter him, and later makes it to his residency at Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center. Now entering his fourth year as a med student, he’s entering his emergency medicine rotation, where he meets his new superiors, Michael Robinavitch, and Jack Abbot.
