Daniel inhales, instantly prepared to use words, words, words to help Rashid save face and also save his own ass because that’s his fucking forté. “My mistake. Your semi-estranged companion and extremely astute business partner used me as a glorified sex toy last night, and it turns out I hardcore needed to be objectified. I doubt this will come as a shock, but that worked wonders for my aging, ailing ego. Louis gives Rashid a look that sits somewhere at the crossroads of amusement, bafflement, and contempt. Razor-edged panic flares in Daniel’s stomach; he has no idea why such a specific cocktail of emotion should get to him when it’s aimed straight past him at someone else.
“Let me have this, Louis,” Rashid says with quiet urgency, his grasp on Daniel’s shoulder tightening. “He’ll be gone soon enough as it is.”

The kitchen lights flicker once, so quickly that he convinces himself that he imagined it, and then there’s a crackling, a kind of static-y hiss against his ear, and the rasp of a voice, “Hey, I need, uh, police?”
There’s something familiar about the voice, something twitching at the back of his mind, the tip of his tongue, but Steve can’t quite place it.
“Hello? Anyone there? Please?” it comes again, laced with so much desperation that it has the back of Steve’s neck prickling uncomfortably, “I need- shit, I need help.”
AKA Billy is trapped in the Upside Down and somehow manages to call Steve's house.

jesus christ this is as so fucking good. i love whatever’s wrong with them.
the situation they find themselves in truly allows them to immediately jump into their mutual obssssive nature when it comes to romance. i love love steve constantly holding himself back because if it was nancy she would’ve moved away from his intensity, but then immediately remembering that it’s NOT nancy, it’s billy, who’s touchy and intense and incredibly receptive of steve’s love bombing.

Billy’s still adjusting to having a seemingly-permanent Mind Flayer inside his head, not to mention navigating this still-new relationship he finds himself in with Steve, and the sudden overabundance of fourteen year olds in his life. But ultimately things aren’t so bad. Maybe he could be happy like this.
If only he could figure out where exactly he fits into this weird family group he finds himself rapidly becoming a part of.

The mind flayer enters Billy Hargrove, but instead of breaking people down to make his own body, he decides Billy’s suits him just fine. Billy, surprising even himself, finds he doesn’t entirely hate that; there are certain benefits to sharing a body with some kind of trans-dimensional monster, and maybe, maybe, some of them wear stupid sailor outfits.
The whole thing might not be so bad after all, except Billy’s mind flayer isn’t the only one.

Billy picks up a butterfly bandage, holds it between his fingers for Steve to see. Waits for Steve to drop his chin in a nod, and then presses it into place against Steve’s busted eyebrow. It’s the best Billy has to give.
This probably isn’t going to work out. This thing Billy’s been trying to have with Steve since he got to Hawkins. Steve’s got these soft edges where Billy’s all blunt and sharp.
Billy drags his fingertips down the side of Steve’s face, presses his thumb against the scar he didn’t leave, and lifts a brow. “How many fights do you lose, Harrington?”
Steve grins, a half-formed thing that is sharp and sad at the same time. “All of them.”

Flushing in embarrassment, Wei Ying hurries over to A-Yuan and crouches to place his hands on his shoulders. “A-Yuan, that’s enough,” he says. “Sorry, Lan Zhan, he used to go to a different bookstore where they host regular storytimes, I think he thinks you’re the designated storyteller for the day—”
He gets to his feet, holding A-Yuan at his hip, and glances up to look at Lan Zhan. It’s an awful, terrible, horrible mistake. This close, every detail of his face is utterly inescapable.
“Story time,” says A-Yuan, lower lip wobbling dangerously.
Wei Ying glances around, finding people staring curiously at the scene unfolding before them. “A-Yuan,” he hisses urgently. “We need to go. I’ll tell you a story on the way home, okay?”
“Do you really need to go?”
Wei Ying starts at Lan Zhan’s voice. He’s still looking steadily at him, an unreadable expression in his eyes.
(Seven years after running away from home to pursue a story that would expose one of the biggest media scandals in recent years, Wei Ying runs into the last person he’s expecting to see at a quaint, forgotten bookstore he hasn’t set foot in for a very long time.)

“It’s okay that you miss him,” said Lan Wangji, a familiar litany to them both by now. “Do you feel sad?”
“I feel sad,” A-Yuan repeated, shoulders hitching with tiny hiccuping sniffs. “When is he coming back?”
“I don’t know. I am not sure where he is.”
But this seemed to frustrate A-Yuan. “Xian-gege! I miss him! Please, baba?” He looked up at him with wet cheeks and a wide, quivering frown. “Please baba can you ask him? I really miss him!” He sobbed again, heartbreakingly.
It stabbed straight through him, cracking open the reservoir of loss and helplessness that was all his own. His child’s grief did that, sometimes. It always took him by surprise. He caught his breath sharply and gathered A-Yuan into his arms, holding him tight until the pain ebbed.
“I will try,” he said softly into A-Yuan’s hair, when he could speak again. He never made uncertain promises and tried not even to raise uncertain hopes, but his son was hurting. His son believed he could make it better. He couldn’t not try.
Wen Qing might at least know who this “Xian-gege” was. He would text her in the morning. It would be a start.

Summary
To say that he runs to his car would be incorrect, as he is a Lan, and running is both undignified and unnecessary unless in immediate danger. Nor does he slam his key into the ignition, or aggressively swerve around the cars on the freeway, or have a mild panic attack at the fact he is picking A-Yuan up late from school for the first time ever.
He comes close, though.
By the time he arrives, it’s 4:35PM, and he has imagined about fifty different worse-case scenarios. The door is partly open when he gets to it, a messy label of 104B—Art Room scrawled with chalk on a placard next to the faded wood. As he opens it fully, he expects to see a wailing, terrified child, or perhaps a scene of utter misery and betrayal.
What he finds is his son, hands covered in paint, being sung to by a beautiful, dark-haired stranger.
“Ducks live in the pond, yellow ducks, happy ducks!”
Lan Wangji stops in his tracks.
