Immediately, Merlin's smile disappears. Belatedly, Arthur remembers his promise to Lancelot. To be fair, being nice doesn’t constitute being killed by someone’s excuse for a vehicle. They really can’t blame Arthur for that.
“He’s doing just fine,” Merlin says defensively. “He’s a classic, and he’s meant to be this way. Hello, by the way, nice to meet you. My name is Merlin, so glad to be travelling with you to our mutual friends’ wedding. Arse.”
Or:
Lancelot and Gwen are getting married on the other side of the continent. Merlin is a reckless driver with a car that shouldn't be allowed on the road, and is the single most annoying person one could ever spend five days in a car with. He's also penniless, rude, secretive, has the broadest smile Arthur has ever seen on a person, and is a piano prodigy.
If only Arthur weren't afraid of flying.

Magnus is poking around in the attic before he starts to consider the possibility that maybe he is wrong. All that’s up here is nearly a dozen boxes worth of meticulously sorted Christmas decorations, some older looking furniture, most of which has been pushed into a circle, and a surprising lack of dust and cobwebs that one normally expects to see in an attic.
But Magnus is old enough to know better. This orphanage for Warlock children the Clave have started is just a flashy distraction to show the world that they’ve changed. Something to back up all their claims of condemning Valentine and his actions five and twenty-five years ago.
He’s still not sure what to make of Lightwood.

“So odd that I’m taking an interest in the future of England, even if I’m not personally interested in the position,” Merlin says, and Arthur has the grace to look slightly abashed.
Or: Prince Arthur needs to find a new Court Sorcerer in the halls of Albion University. Merlin just wants to apply to a PhD in Magical Neo-Linguistics without being told that his destiny is to be by His Royal Horrendousness' side.
Of course, destiny doesn't take no for an answer.

Their captor grabs Arthur, pressing a knife tightly to his throat.
“Got any confessions for me now, boy?” The man snarls, his gaze fixed almost feverishly on Merlin.
There’s a look on Merlin’s face that Arthur has never seen before. “Forgive me,” he says, and his voice is flat and hollow and sorry. Then, between one breath and the next, the fear on his face is replaced by determination.
His eyes flood with gold, and the knife against Arthur’s throat clatters to the ground.

Arthur and Merlin are captured, and Merlin, assumed to be an easily breakable servant, is tortured for information. He can handle it all, right up until the knife turns on his king.
