Erik Lehnsherr is not a good man and he knows it. He's described himself as Frankenstein's monster, as tends to happen when a boy is tortured by the man who murdered his mother in front of him. And if, in the dark of some nights, he wondered whether there had ever been the possibility of another path, that was a matter only for himself. If asked, he would have said the question had never crossed his mind and that it wasn't the asker's business anyway. Of his many talents, learning to hide his emotions was the second easiest one behind his mutation. Despite the loneliness, it was safer that way.

Set after Apocalypse but some time before Dark Phoenix. Erik didn’t accept Charles’ offer to stay at Westchester and both parted on good terms. However, Erik’s mind isn’t calm and he can’t go past his grief, guilt and self-loathing. To the loss of his family he also adds the almost world war he’d started with En Sabah Nur, and he finds it impossible to rest. Charles sees his suffering in his mind, and Erik finally gives in and goes to the only person who can help him, but will Charles be able to give Erik what he needs?

"There was one thing that had always followed Erik around and, in the beginning, it hadn’t bothered him. So what if most of the humans thought he was a villain? Someone to be feared? He didn’t really care about them or what happened to them. To them, maybe he was the villain.
The part he hadn’t taken into account was the way mutants would see him as well. It would seem Charles had done better in convincing him that his way, peace, and harmony, was the right way and to avoid Erik’s plan."

"Erik’s relationship with physical contact had never been simply black and white. There had, since the camps, been layer upon layer of thoughts, feelings, and emotions there. It wasn’t that he hated all touch, just certain contact could really set him on edge and make him drive his fist through a wall. Part of it was a new development as well. Since getting out of prison he’s realized there are some forms of contact he just can’t stand.
A decade ago, he lived for those casual touches, brief moments where he felt less alone and knew someone was with him. They grounded him and he could admit that he was touch starved. Now, it's all different."
