Ilya Rozanov has a pretty decent life. Decent job, good pay, citizenship, a wonderful husband who‘s playing hockey at the top of the league. Sure, being military sucks ass, but at least he gets a good training out of it. Aircrafts and mechanics are an easy thing to focus on - even when his head is loud.
Everything is going great. No problems.
So why does he feel like wanting to rip his skin off?
Or: Ilya has a day of anxiety and disregulation and, for once, instead of isolating, he tells Shane.

"Go away!" His father’s shout forced Ilya awake from his sleep.
His breath was ragged, his gaze searching the surroundings in a daze. He was still inside Shane’s room at the cottage, but he didn't find him there. Ilya was all alone in the dark room.
"He... help..." The words escaped his lips just like that after seeing Shane, who had just entered the room with a glass of water in his hand.
Instantly, the man with the beautiful freckles panicked and rushed toward Ilya.

It’s a nothing interview. Pre-game in Montreal before they warm up for the game against Boston. One camera, one reporter Shane recognises but doesn’t really know. The question’s about a Russian rookie adjusting to the league. Shane answers in English at first. Then the reporter follows up, in Russian.
The NHL translator shifts instinctively, already stepping closer.
Shane doesn’t pause. He answers back in Russian before the translator can open his mouth, quick and clean, accent careful but confident. Just a sentence. Then another. The translator hesitates, then stops entirely, hands dropping like he’s been waved off without a word.
Shane switches back to English like it didn’t happen.
The reporter freezes. The camera freezes. Fans online detonate.

When Ilya loses control and takes a few too many pills before a game, it seems that the similarities between himself and his mother could become his undoing. Luckily, Shane steps in to carry Ilya home.

In late 2012 when Shane has a meltdown and frantically tells them to call Lily, for the first time Yuna’s ever witnessed, Shane is coaxed out of one of them instead of just suffering through until the exhaustion wins out instead—and all by some mysterious, apparently very well attuned to Shane, 'Lily'.
She hadn’t meant to see the number before she’d pressed it and fumbled the phone up to Shane’s ear. It was simply a byproduct of the situation, something Shane had asked for her to do.
…Memorizing it and then texting that number to thank Lily for their help was not something she’d been asked to do. But she worries so much about Shane, and Lily is a reassurance. Not a pry for details but the simple, verifiable confirmation: he’s okay.
Lily, on the other hand, very much enjoys being able to make oddly specific 'your mother' jokes to Shane much more often now. (And maybe the whole family piece of it, too.)

Ilya climbed back onto the bed, the mattress sinking under his weight, and slotted himself between Shane’s legs with the naturalness of someone who belonged in that space. His hands found the Canadian’s thighs, pulling him closer.
“And…” Shane tried to shift focus from his own fright, his mind still processing the last two minutes. “Have I mentioned how sexy you sound speaking Russian?”
Ilya tilted his head, a slow half-smile spreading across his face. The blue of his eyes darkened a shade.
