It couldn't have been his eyes which dilated to drink in as much light as possible from his darkening surroundings. The pupillary response which originated in the very stem of the brain. Absent only in those irrovocably absent themselves. So it couldn't have been the eyes in the head of the body that sits on the edge of the bed in a spare room of the Lloy estate, that allow Occtis to see.
Or: Occtis is a skilled anatomist and necromancer. Neither of these areas of study can explain to him why he is tethered to a dead body that cannot possibly be his own.
