Summary
He wonders if heaven will look like Nebraska. That perhaps heaven is more personalized than it reads in the Bible. It'll be like a dream you have when your inner-consciousness is secretly yearning for a time that's been lost. That eases his mind. Just him, alone among the birds and tall grass.
Or
Dennis Whittaker just can’t do it anymore.

Summary
I’m saying this…not to reprimand you— you’re not in any trouble—“ he sighs, reaching up to put a hand on his shoulder. “You’ve been off this past week. People are worried.”
Dennis takes a step back, flexing his hands.
”I’m—“
He swallows, keeping his breath steady.
He feels like he’s under a microscope; the thought that everybody can see what’s wrong with him, can tell what he’s done— it makes bile crawl up his throat.
Why can’t he just fucking speak?
Tell Doctor Robby what happened a few years back, the phone call from his parents back home—
what he did.

Summary
In Jack’s head, the line between them gets blurry sometimes, the distinctions between his and Robby’s experiences getting tangled together. Robby lost his arm in Iraq, just below the elbow, and Jack lost his leg in a motorcycle accident, all the way up to the pelvis. No, Jack lost the arm. No, he left his leg in Iraq. Robby left his arm on the interstate, somewhere in southern Ohio.

Summary
Robby goes on his motorcycle trip for his sabbatical. He really thought it would help him clear his head, fix his mind, turn him into a new man… But two months in, he has to reckon with the fact that he is still running away and it hasn’t fixed a single thing. If anything, it all seems even worse than it was and he is losing his way back.
Feeling more isolated and alienated than ever, he wonders what the future could even hold. But while he may not have many people in his life, those are thankfully not willing to give up on him. And maybe, maybe they could help him find his way home.
He stayed there, wiping stingy tears away from his eyes with the sleeve of his jacket and sniffling. He knew Dana was right. The guilt coiled at the bottom of his stomach knew she was right. But he was terrified, and the longer it went on, the worse it became. He didn’t know how to get out of it. He was trying, he desperately was, but the urge to run away always won. And when it didn’t, the paralysis did and made him a prisoner of his own body and mind.

Summary
The door to Jack and Dana’s bedroom is cracked, soft light spilling into the dark hallway, and Robby pauses, some nearly-forgotten prayer silently spilling past his lips as he takes a deep breath and pushes the door open.
His heart slams against the center of his sternum as he finds Jack sitting on the end of the bed, his prosthetic at his left side and one of his handguns at his right. Robby swallows thickly and steps into the room—moving slowly but deliberately. Jack doesn’t even look at him, just blankly stares at the wall with a worn look on his freckled face, even as Robby says, “You know, I’m not sure if Dana would forgive either of us if you shot yourself and ruined her favorite set of sheets.”
As Dana sends Robby to check on Jack, he finds more than what he bargained for.

Summary
As he stood there in Robby’s doorway, Jack’s gaze caught on the bottle of wine, cast aside earlier and forgotten. He had come to celebrate. His… best friend? The term seemed inadequate for what Robby was to him. His Robby had been planning to kill himself, likely for months, and Jack hadn’t even suspected anything was off until the last possible moment.

Robby never really planned on taking that sabbatical. Jack finds him just in time.

Summary
[He swallowed again, raising the phone to his ear, squeezing his eyes tight.
It only rang twice before his dad picked up. “Hey, kiddo.”
Even at fifty-four years old, Robby was still his kiddo. Robby choked on a sob. “Hey, abba.”
“Whoa, you okay?”
Robby swallowed, hating how a whimper slipped out. “No. No, I’m not okay. Can you come get me?” He honestly did not trust himself enough to drive at the moment. Not over the bridge and at least half an hour away, probably more with traffic.
“Yeah, of course. Where are you?” There was shuffling on the other end of the line.
Except Robby didn’t know how to answer. He was at the park, but he didn’t want to wait half an hour there for his dad to pick him up. He also wanted a shower and to change. To get the awful day off of him. But he also was afraid to walk home. Was afraid he’d do something dumb.
“Can you pick me up at my apartment? But—but stay on the line?” That would keep him accountable. He couldn’t let something happen to himself if his dad was listening.
“Yeah, kiddo. Half an hour.”]

Summary
He mutters, "I'm not letting go until you tell me what you're going to do when you've crossed state lines."
"I told you," Robby huffs, "Beer. Hot apple cider. Maybe a chicken pot pie on the porch of some good Samaritan who takes pity on me."
"Yeah? Chicken pot pie?" Jack hums, raising his eyebrows, receiving an affirming nod from the other. "Gonna go on a stereotypical-ass spirit journey? That's what you're going to do, Michael? That's the reason you hugged me like that? Like you were savoring it?"
/
And Michael Robinavitch would have gotten away with it, too, if it weren't for Jack Abbot.

Summary
“Can I help? Please, I want— Let me help.”
It’s all too much, but his last three words prove to be Robby’s tipping point, pushing him finally and fully over the edge.
Desperate, jerky, he nods against Jack’s shoulder. He just barely manages to choke out, “Please,” and, “I’m so sorry,” before Jack shushes him.
“Don’t be sorry,” Jack says on repeat. “Don’t you be sorry, it’s okay. It’s all going to be okay, I got you, brother, alright? Neither of us is going anywhere without each other, I can promise you that.”
or: robby contemplates taking his own life after his last shift before his sabbatical. jack sees right through him.
