He goes to the fridge to look for the bell peppers, and while he’s in there, he says, “It was a good first kiss. As far as I could tell. I hadn’t really kissed anyone before.” He takes an orange bell pepper from the bag his mom brought over and brings it over to the counter. “Not anyone I really wanted to kiss anyway.” He cuts the top and bottom off the pepper and then works on cutting out the seeds. “Ilya’s a good kisser,” he adds. And he can’t believe he’s just said that out loud to his mom.

It’s a nothing interview. Pre-game in Montreal before they warm up for the game against Boston. One camera, one reporter Shane recognises but doesn’t really know. The question’s about a Russian rookie adjusting to the league. Shane answers in English at first. Then the reporter follows up, in Russian.
The NHL translator shifts instinctively, already stepping closer.
Shane doesn’t pause. He answers back in Russian before the translator can open his mouth, quick and clean, accent careful but confident. Just a sentence. Then another. The translator hesitates, then stops entirely, hands dropping like he’s been waved off without a word.
Shane switches back to English like it didn’t happen.
The reporter freezes. The camera freezes. Fans online detonate.

He needed to send out an SOS, but he had set his phone down somewhere and had no idea if it was in the sunroom, bedroom, or bathroom, and wasn’t about to go dash around to hunt it down. And as hard as he wracked his brain, he couldn’t come up with a single plausible explanation for his presence in Shane’s summer home other than, “I’m in love with your son. We have been fucking since we were teenagers. We have a ten year plan.”
Instead, what he choked out was, “Sorry. No English.”

Don’t go back to sleep.” Ilya tries to bury back into Shane’s chest, but adrenaline knifes through Shane’s hangover long enough for him to peel Ilya off and roll him into his back. Ilya blinks blearily up at him, starfished in the sheets. Beautiful and naked and missing his mother’s cross.
OR: When Ilya’s cross goes missing after the Centaurs celebrate their first Stanley Cup win, Shane is determined to get it back. And so are the Centaurs. And the rest of Ottawa.

Hayden had known Shane was gay for a while now.
He didn’t want his best friend to live in a world where it felt dangerous to be his true self. He didn’t want anyone to have to live that way. So lately he had been extra sensitive to the homophobia that was rampant in the NHL. He started calling out his teammates who made homophobic comments. He had already gotten in several fights on the ice over the issue. After being so passive on the issue for so long, he wasn’t holding back any longer.
So he certainly didn’t hold back when he heard Shane’s rival, Ilya fucking Rozanov, being homophobic toward Shane.
OR: Hayden is just trying to be a good ally. He accidentally commits a hate crime instead. Oops.

The two of them were Rozanov and Hollander, and that was all they could ever be. Ilya knew that. They were Hollander and Rozanov to the public, to the media, to their teammates, to their coaches, and they were supposed to be that to each other as well.

Ilya is a proud Canadian now, Shane sees him look at his passport sometimes when they are in airports, running his thumb on the maple leaf embossed on the blue document. He’s proud to live in Ottawa, to be a citizen and he tells everyone how much he loves Canada every single time he gets the opportunity to. He even speaks French now, just enough to pass his citizenship, but every single time a French reporter asks a question, he makes the effort to try to get the words out properly.
But representing Canada at the Olympics? Shane doesn’t even know if Ilya thought it was a possibility. Ilya’s been telling him how excited he is to support Shane in Italy and be a good WAG, ready to take a backseat while Shane shines on the international stage, but now there might be a chance they both get to go.
Or, Ilya and Shane both get selected to represent Canada at the 2026 Olympics and Ilya has a lot of feelings about it.
