I did look old: my hair was in-between black and silver, and there were lines etched all over my face. I saw myself every day in the mirror, and every day I looked older.
“Thanks,” I said, and when she smiled it was just a fragmentary thing, there and then gone again, sad but not bitter, not exactly.
