Rumi died. Her blood soaked into the dirt and her body was buried next to her mother's where no one ever visited. She watched as the soil was moved and her name was scratched into a stone. She learned how to interact with the world around her when her hands passed through people and struggled to grab objects. She found comfort in the Honmoon layering itself over her in a way it never had when she was alive. And she grieved the closeness she had with Mira and Zoey more than she did her own life as she fought next to them with distance that could never be closed.
Or
Rumi is a ghost and is using everything she has left to seal the Honmoon so she can finally move on.

Rumi knew it the way she knew that the sun rose in the east and set in the smooth line of Mira’s shoulders, graceful and lithe. Rumi knew it the way oceans ebb and words flowed through Zoey. Rumi knew it the way she knew she would die.
And that the Honmoon would remain.
Because the Honmoon was stronger than ever. It waxed as she waned.
And that was the thing, wasn't it.
Or: Rumi died that night at Namsan Tower. It just took her body a little while to catch up.

Rumi is going to die. Not today. Probably not tomorrow. But soon. Sooner than most. Rumi is not going to live a long life. She might not even make it a quarter of the way through.
Rumi is eleven, and she realizes just how short her lifespan will be. Rumi is going to die young, just like her mother, because she is a demon. She is both demon and hunter, predator and prey, and there is no possible way she will get to grow old.

Rumi always understood what her purpose was. Her entire life revolved around protecting those she loved. The Honmoon and turning it gold, her girls, far before she ever knew them, the people of the world living their lives, and Celine, who raised her and held the Honmoon together until she was ready.
Rumi understood her patterns couldn’t be seen, that her shame and fears couldn’t be known. But, sometimes, she thinks her girls – the world even – would accept every part of her – that there was nothing to fear.
Reality always slapped her in the face. Not until the golden Honmoon. Once the golden Honmoon was in place everything would be fine. No more lies, no more secrets. She would finally be fixed, her duty complete.

“You’ve been looking forward to this release date for actual years, Rumi!” Zoey wriggled out from under Rumi’s arm and clutched at her shoulders for emphasis, “That’s longer than the lifespan of a killifish- you can absolutely take the day to enjoy it.”

Rumi hadn’t meant to cause such a scene. She just wasn’t thinking straight.
Celine had told her Zoey and Mira would kill her if they found out what she was, and Rumi had come to the conclusion that she was probably right.
Her plan, as tenuous a description as that word was, was to cut the patterns out. If she could cut out the parts of her that made her dangerous, that made her less than human, that made her so unloveable, maybe she’d stop feeling so fucking guilty every time Mira or Zoey opened up to her.
They loved each other from the start, but it just wasn't that simple.

During a month-long hiatus, Mira and Zoey decide to take Rumi along for some ghost and demon hunting in a house known for its urban legends regarding a trio of demon hunters. Knowing that the latter is a devout skeptic of the supernatural, they’re hoping their investigation will finally convert Rumi to the side of the believers, or at least capture some quality footage of their fearless leader getting jumpy.
Little do they know, Rumi’s not exactly human herself, and she’s going to protect her girls from any evil spirits or malignant demons.
Or, this is a Buzzfeed Unsolved AU where hunters don’t exist, and Rumi’s secret demon heritage allows her to protect her girls from all the things that go bump in the night while playing the resident skeptic to conceal her identity.

Rumi is a broken creature, shunned by the ones she loves and betrayed by those she trusts. But there still is a task to be done, a world to save. Two people she must ensure see the light of the next horizon. Mira and Zoey. And the universe will not let her give up until that is done. She will not let herself give up until it is done.
Even if the cost is herself.
(or, a time-loop fic where Rumi is unable to die, sent back over and over again to stop the invasion of the demon realm and save Mira and Zoey from Gwi-Ma's wrath, breaking her in ways she didn't think was possible)
