Staying up with his ear pressed against the door, he waited all night for it to happen. When it didn’t, he started formulating a plan to be ready at the first sign of trouble. Every time he went home, he updated that plan. Checking the political status of the neighboring countries and memorizing the map.
Even if everyone went to Berlin, he would go to Finland.

He didn’t have an answer.
All he had was six years of silence, a thousand nights of imagining what he would say if they ever ended up in the same city again, and the way Hollander had just looked right through him like he was nothing at all.

Most MHL fans knew who Troy Barrett was. Played for Toronto, one of the best right wings in the league, and an absolute asshole who was best friends with Dallas Kent. He could chirp and scrap with the best of them, and nearly anyone who heard him speak would agree he deserved to get punched as often as he did. Typically quiet, handsome enough it was hard to hate him. That was how he was known, and how he had been known since he joined the league. Then there were some videos released. Then there was a rather strong shift in public perception, and a massive amount of confusion.

"It just works better like that. Taking his mind off of the logistics and the meaning of it all and the implications lets him put that focus to better work on the actual thing he cares about: hockey. It really isn’t that different from outsourcing his branding to Mom, or any less embarrassing than his dietician meal prepping for him or his trainer mapping out his workout plan. They’re experts in their field, nutrition and marketing and fucking. Shane is an expert in his: taking all that into his body and using it to be fucking awesome at hockey. It’s win, win, win.
Meals get delivered at his door. Room numbers and plans get texted to him. And appointments with photographers get emailed with subject lines reminding him to remember to use the good shampoo in his hair before them.
He’s still in control in the sense he’s letting it all happen for him, except that sometimes, especially at these stupid fucking photoshoots, it feels a little bit like it’s happening to him, instead."
Shane gets into a bad situation with a photographer who has pictures Shane would rather not get out. Ilya and Rose find out about it, eventually.
