Someone was going to snap before the concert, and Aldo Bellini had placed a fifteen dollar bet with Vincent that it would be the universally loathed Gofreddo Tedesco: first chair violist, and widely agreed to be the first man cannablized in the scenario of a plane crash.
He was, first and foremost, an arrogant bastard. The type to show up thirty-five minutes late to rehearsal without a care in the world. The type to shout at the freshman second violins for ruining tone of the inner voices, and most of all the type to glare at anyone who dared not to treat their instrumental career as if it were a life-or-death situation, never mind the treatment of his own musical talent. Tedesco excused his own tardiness—he was the first chair after all—but any slack to anyone beside himself was an unthinkable concept; an insult to his expertise.
This is what Aldo Bellini assumed, at least.
The truth may have been off, his mentality, that is. His actions were fact: blunt, rude and brooding exactly as expected, yet something hummed quiet and off key deep beneath his skin.
When misconceptions collide with shame, repression and wit, a storm of things can happen. This fic will just show you one of them.

Tedesco reaches into his luggage, before pulling out a copy of Niccolo Machiavelli’s The Prince. It can be enough, he believes, to muse on what might’ve been instead of mourning it. He admires the words of the Florentian, and wishes that others in his out-group would as well.
One cannot scold him for his surprise, when he kicks his feet up and reaches in for the bookmark he’d have left, and all he finds in this English copy is the handwriting of his mortal enemy on a crinkled receipt for pan au chocolat.
Talk about shame, he thinks, Aldo Bellini’s loopy handwriting in his hands. It reads — Non si può evitare la guerra; si può solo posticipare a vantaggio degli altri.
Or, Bellini and Tedesco have identical suitcases and a luggage switch up has Tedesco flying to New York to retrieve his things. The wounds are still fresh following the conclave.
