Adam doesn’t think there’s anything he could do to prepare for seeing Ronan get injured playing hockey. In hindsight, Adam will realize it was an inevitability, an eventuality, because strapping on skates a few nights a week means occasionally getting hurt, even in a no-checking, late-night beer league. Adam would have expected an awkward fall, or getting hit with a puck somewhere that couldn't be skated or shaken off, though. Not an aggressive opponent purposefully sweeping Ronan’s legs out from under him so Ronan crashed down like a ton of bricks, head whipping back to hit the ice.
When Ronan gets a concussion playing hockey, Adam does his best to take care of him.

He bit into the burger and considered that he never used to be the kind of person who would eat something if he didn't need it, just because it tasted good, but that had clearly changed.
He wasn't hungry, but he wanted to eat, so he did.
And Ronan could barely keep his eyes on the road. Adam didn't know what was so distracting about just watching him eat, but the more time he spent running similar experiments, the more Adam was convinced that Ronan liked it.

Adam was finely tuned into Ronan, and Ronan into him. His distress, his love, his anxiety, his happiness, they were always so palpable to him. Adam could feel it anywhere. It would start as a tingling in his hands, and then escalated into a comfortable warmth that would then travel up his arms before he felt the additional emotion join his own, like a bubble attracted to and joined another. It was surreal.
When Adam shared this realization with Ronan, the boys hypothesized and liked to think that Cabeswater had created a special bond between its Greywaren and its Magician. The Foxway women said that it was due to Adam’s heightened empathy as a psychic and the Magician. Either way, Adam cherished it even if it could be overwhelming.
