Inej felt a drop of fear in her stomach, and she had to school herself to stillness.
"I don't want to hold my blade to your neck," she whispered, trying to keep the emotions out of her voice. He had every right to tell her all the darkest, deepest things his brain could conjure up. She wanted to know them. But she had the right to say no, just as he did. "I don't want to hurt you."
He had smiled, his eyes watching her lips. "And that's why I would let you," he breathed.Or, a scene on the theme of "Kaz Brekker has senses, and someone should deprive him of them."

Of all the things Inej expected to find on the deck of her ship in the dead of night, Kaz Brekker was not one of them.
All she saw of him at first was his silhouette against the harbor lights: coat collar flipped up against the breeze, cane planted firmly at his side.
Too firmly, she realized.
“Kaz?” she called, and he turned to face her.
“Inej,” he said. Then he collapsed to the ground.

“If you’re here for something honest and respectable, I’ll eat my guns piecemeal,” said Jesper. He scrubbed his face. “How long have you been telling those poor girls about your sick mother in Oldendaal?”
“It was Zierfoort, actually.”
“I don’t care where it was! What are you doing?”
“I thought I wasn’t supposed to involve you in my schemes anymore.” said Kaz petulantly, glancing in the mirror to rearrange his jacket.
“Kaz, you playing the victim is about as natural as a flock of lime-green flamingos, so don’t bother,” said Jesper. “Is it a heist? A blackmail job? Gathering information?”
“Who said it was just one thing?” said Kaz, straightening his cuffs with two brisk jerks. “This place is the playground for the children of the rich and prosperous, Jes. I could have a million reasons for being here. But since you’re here for reasons both honest and respectable, I can assure you I’ll stay out of your way–”

Her name sounds exactly right in his rock salt rasp. It spells trouble. She shakes it off and tries to focus on answering the question. She supposes that in a different world she could be a student. She would live in a cozy apartment with some other girls, and this would just be a part-time job, so she would have time to attend lectures and write papers and go on dates.
But Inej does not live in that world. She lives in this one.
