Bood is right about the fines, but Ilya’s worst habit is that he just can’t stop digging his own grave. Voronin is so goddamn smug, and Comeau is smirking like he’s punched Ilya in the face with his own championship ring; Ilya can’t help but want to make things worse.
Ilya yanks himself free of Bood and skates closer to the Voyageurs. He tilts his lips away from the cameras before he speaks. “I know you think you are Montreal’s new Shane Hollander, karlusha,” he whispers, “but you do not need to fuck me, too.”
Voronin shoves him away with a laugh. “I would rather be Montreal’s Shane Hollander than Shane Hollander’s Lily.”
And suddenly, Ilya knows why Comeau’s words were so familiar.
He drops his gloves and breaks the rookie’s perfect little teeth.

Summary
He doesn’t know how he ends up in the downstairs coat closet.
No memory exists of moving, of going down the staircase and shedding his ruined clothing until he’s only in his underwear, or opening the door and ripping all of Mama’s coats down to the floor. Vaguely, he recalls trembling in the cloud of her scent, stale and unhappy under the haze of old cigarettes.
What he remembers is flashes. Alexei, furious tears in his eyes, telling Papa he’d found Ilya. Papa, scowling down at him, snapping, “Ilya, get out of this closet right now.” One of Papa’s cop friends, saying, “Jesus, Grika, look at him. He’s in h—” and Papa replying coldly, “Not another word.”
Papa, kneeling in front of the closet, saying in an uncomfortable, painfully false, soft voice, “Synok, come out now. You cannot nest here.”

“You’re being serious right now. This isn’t a prank?”
“Yes. I mean, no, it’s not a prank, yes I’m being serious.”
Plainly, Bood replies, “What the fuck.” He doesn’t sound angry, or like he thinks Shane is lying.
They stare at each other for a moment, an undercurrent of… something… flowing between them. Shane can’t understand what it is beyond how confused he feels. What is going on right now? Why does Bood think he’s pranking him?
“Maybe we were both just really drunk,” Bood says finally, though he certainly doesn’t sound like he believes it. “Maybe we were all drunk.”
