Troy made an L-shape with his index finger and thumb, like suddenly he was a movie director and Ilya was his newest muse. “You’re like one of those rom-com heartthrobs. Harris and I watched one the other night, where this campus bad boy is actually a huge nerd. You know, secretly pounding textbooks in the library.”
“Yes, exactly!” Wyatt said. “You’re like the opposite of the girl that takes off her glasses in a movie and everyone realizes she’s hot. You put them on, for that effect.”
Ilya looked mildly offended. “Oh, so you did not think I was hot before?”
“Eh, on paper, I guess.”
“On paper,” Ilya repeated back, grimacing. “Like taxes? You think I am as interesting as doing your fucking taxes?”
The world goes crazy over Ilya in glasses, and Shane tries to deal.

Summary
When Shane first arrives, he is twenty-something again, tired down to the soul because he’s used it to the fullest this time. It comes back to him in increments, his history and present circumstances, because he’s not even aware he’s sitting on a park bench at first, overlooking a sky at near-dusk. He blinks into it, smiling like a dope, before remembering, right, I’ve died. It’s a matter-of-fact to him, maybe more than it should be, since he knows there will be a new life for him, waiting in the morning.
On the verge of reincarnation, Shane remembers Ilya all over again.

Shane felt it wasn’t jealousy, or not in some killing way, at least. By now he knew he had Ilya by the soul. It was just annoying that Troy may have had some context surrounding Ilya that Shane didn’t, as if some crack in his knowledge could amount to a gulf he hadn’t crossed yet.
Or, there are things Troy knows about Ilya that Shane doesn’t. Shane navigates this territory with some trepidation.

He thinks of Svetlana and him at McDonald’s, drunk and laughing; sprints, instead of long and dreadful runs; and even then that familiar swath of freckles, all faded from weak winter sun.
There are times when Ilya is sorry, and there are times when he is not.

More blood, his mind supplies rather unhelpfully.
