“If she was, you’d smell her,” another replies. “All rotten and spoiled inside.”
Laughter follows—ugly, sharp, and mean. Then the sound of hooves, more footsteps trailing through the underbrush as the patrol begins to move on.
High up above the hunting party, out of their sight, Fiyero tenses, jaw tightening as the words sink in. But it’s Elphaba he watches—the way her lips curve downward almost imperceptibly, her shoulders pulling in as her gaze drops, like she’s bracing for him to pull away. Like part of her believed, even for a second, that those words might reach him too.When she hesitates, he tilts her chin up with quiet insistence, steady and unshakable.
“No,” he says looking her deep in the eyes, voice barely above a whisper, but every next syllable is anchored like stone. “They don’t know a single true thing about you.”--------------------------------------------------

“Sit behind me,” Elphaba instructs, gesturing to her broom. She expects hesitation, expects that Fiyero will question his own safety, or the prudence of being in close proximity to the Witch. She half expects that he will come to his senses and change his mind entirely, find a way to return to the charmed Palace life he’s been leading.
Instead he does exactly as told, the broom dipping only slightly before the magic adjusts to accommodate his added weight. “Can I hold onto you?”
“Probably should, if you don’t want to fall off,” she agrees, catching her breath when he immediately wraps both arms around her waist.
“Go,” he says firmly, close enough that his breath tickles her ear.

--Fiyero spreads his hands. “How do you think I knew of this place? How do you think I garnered enough trust to be given safe passage here? Or do you not actually talk to anyone else who shares your cause?”She tries to hide it, but he sees the way those last words land like a blow. All at once, he realizes that they’re true: that she truly has been surviving on her own, that in the years since the Wizard’s betrayal, she hasn’t ever sought another ally.
“Why would I?” she asks in a tone that’s aiming for bitter but is decidedly more broken. “I’m the Witch. That’s all anyone needs to know.”
FIyero finds her gaze and holds it, sensing that she won’t allow herself to be touched at the moment. “You’re my friend. That’s all I need to know.

Summary
The desert outside of Oz feels like it could go on forever.
But of course, Elphaba would say later, that didn’t make any sense. Eventually, though seemingly longer than any account either of them had ever heard would state, they begin encountering settlements with people from the land known as Ev.
Ev isn’t Oz, and that’s really for the better, but it means that Elphaba and Fiyero have to adjust to so many things being different, and not just the obvious.
