Summary
Malachi Wentron used to be a holy paladin, living and breathing his oath to vanquish demons and protect the people of Talmur. Then he broke that oath and was cast out of the favor of the church. Now he is the head of security for the queen and dealing with demonic incursions from neighboring lands. When a demon pops into court and offers his queen a deal to eradicate their "other-demon-race" enemies (he thought demons were all the same, who knew?) in exchange for peace with his own realm, there's a catch: Their king demands one mortal with unquestioned moral character to act as shield, witness and servant through the accords. Absolute loyalty. Complete servitude. Bound to his will and his alone. The queen doesn't even have to ask; to save Talmur, he'll swear an unbreakable oath to the beast. It feels like the king lives to make Malachi angry, only to scold him like a brat when his temper flares, but for the good of Talmur... he'll have to make it work. He just wasn't expecting for a lot of personal history and previous oaths to be dragged into his present.

Mike is that level of excited when he seems to be telling the story with his whole body, hands in motion, face going through a hundred expressions in a second, eyes glinting and very intense. The side of his face is lit by the 7 pm light from the window, that part of his hair a sunny fuzz. Then, two facts dawn on Will at once: 1) that might be his favorite version of Mike, and 2) this version hasn’t appeared in so long it feels like being hit and smothered by something really soft and warm.
‘Sounds cool,’ he says and Mike nods, and smiles, and rubs his hands, ‘so how’s ‘water’ again?’

He'd not ever seen him like this- not even in the moments after they'd laid together, when Aerion always seemed so intent on wringing every moment of intimacy from him, no matter how hesitant Baelor always was to give any more than what was required in the heat of the moment.
