The distant crash of the waves rumble in sync with his stuttered breaths as he crosses the crest of the hill with a heavy heart, the horizon vanishing behind him, leaving only the steadiness of land to comfort him. Leorio and Kurapika don't seem too phased by it, but they don't know it as he does. They don't know how Gon's heart pumps saltwater and how his lungs were made for to hold, made to be submerged in violent depths.
When the Kiriko hoist them in their large claws, soaring at dizzying heights, Leorio shouts something about not looking down.
But Gon is only looking to the sea, always to the sea.

Summary
Gon is seven years old when he loses his way in the forest behind Aunt Mito’s house. After wandering for hours he stumbles upon a young man in a clearing: a fortune teller named Killua, who is neither kind nor polite but still offers to guide Gon home. Gon, intrigued by his new friend, continues to replay their encounter even when the summer is over.
The next summer, Gon returns to search for Killua’s company. He finds him. And he continues to seek him out the next year, and the next, and the next.
Soon, all Gon can think about is going to see Killua again. Yet some things about their meetings are decidedly strange. For one, Killua never seems to remember him. He’s always wearing the same clothes. And, now that Gon is old enough to see it, he always looks a little sad…

The sickness had struck suddenly.
According to Kikyo, Illumi had been acting completely normal up until the moment he’d collapsed at dinner. It proved fortunate that he was visiting home at the time, as they were able to give him excellent medical care right away.
And yet, nothing the family doctors tried seemed to make any difference in his condition. Days passed, and Illumi still didn’t awaken. An oppressive Nen hovered over him, one that no exorcist could dispel or even make sense of.
Slowly, day by day, Illumi began to change. It was almost unnoticeable at first—just a new tint of green in his fingernails, an unnatural growth to his hair. Soon enough, it became impossible to ignore. Illumi’s eyes were sunken in his skull, tiny vines sprouting out of them and climbing down his face. Thicker tendrils of vines sprouted from various places on his body and grew over him, imprisoning him in a thorny cage.
Kalluto couldn’t stand to be in the same room as him for long.

In Dori City, Gon and Killua train and prepare and wait for the East Gorteau invasion. One gray afternoon, somebody falls from the high Gothic tower in the city square. These two things don’t seem connected—at first.
Gon is without his Nen for 30 days, but he insists on investigating the death—it might have something to do with the Ants, right Killua? Killua agrees, because ever since the other team members brought Kite back out of NGL, it seems like the only thing that will put some life back in Gon’s eyes.
But every day, a growing dread is creeping over him, a sinking feeling he can’t shake: something is going wrong. The looming invasion, the death, the way Gon has been acting lately…it feels like they’re all circling around and around something terrible at the center that Killua can’t put a name to.
Or maybe he just doesn’t want to.

Your eyes look a lot like theirs,” Abe said, almost too casual for the severity of her implication. “Now, I’m not saying you have to tell us everything that happened, but you should know it’ll eat you up like a beast if you don’t deal with it.”
Gon looked at his great-grandmother, the wisdom of her years more than he could fathom, and asked, “How do I deal with it?”
“You have to be willing to accept help,” she said.
When Gon has a hard time transitioning back into life on Whale Island, he starts therapy. He also sees a math tutor, re-trains his nen, launches a tourism business, and spends a completely normal amount of time thinking about Killua's eyes.

Killua: The combination of being hopelessly in love, not being able to forget the guy and move on despite being heartlessly rejected, and not hearing anything about him for two years culminated in one gloriously horrid feeling—hatred.
Gon: In the bathroom, Gon splashed his face with water. He needed to take a second to think. Whatever he did, Gon knew that he couldn’t mess this up. No hasty impulsive actions. He wasn’t the same Gon as he was six years ago, and he would show that to Killua.
