It should have been a simple thing, to persuade a mer to give him a few scales for a spell. All part of the usual Winchester byline: saving people, hunting things.

Summary

Summary
It's like being buried at the bottom of a very deep, very dark well. Castiel has lived enough, sinned enough, for the weight of his mistakes to pin him flat in the darkness. It's shame and guilt and grief and each memory anchors him with a razor specificity, there in the lightless silence. This is how it works, he supposes. His own thoughts will devour him alive until he sips oblivion by choice, out of sheer desperation, and the void will know peace at last.
But that was the bargain. He took that upon himself. His choice. Choice, he thinks, and would laugh if he still had a mouth to laugh with. Freedom is a length of rope.
Then, after what could have been many eternities or just one, a pang of agony comes that isn't his own.

Things are looking up when he meets Cas, an awkward (and gorgeous) graduate student who’s actually doing honest-to-god research into the local tent revival meetings. When that research takes a weird and personal turn, Dean’s left to face two very serious realities: one, this may be a real case after all, and two, he’s fallen way harder for Cas than he should ever have let himself.

Camp Chitaqua is definitely not a place to raise a child; Croats come from every angle and they’re never sure when they’re going to get their next meal, as they have no idea when they’ll manage a supply run. Despite it, when Cas falls pregnant with Dean’s baby, he’s determined to bring it into the world, even though the other women and children haven’t survived it. He’s sure he can do it with Dean by his side, but he never really stopped to think whether Dean was actually on his side to begin with.
