Skinner stopped him. “As of last week, William, you are 31, well of marrying age. As of five hours ago, you need an heir, and an alliance that is not easily dissolved. It is the easiest and fastest way to attach your power to somewhere outside of the Republic and gain a better footing in the States General. More than that, you will be wanting someone other than myself to confide in, someone you can trust. I know you may not want a wife, but you need one, and the Republic needs you. You are a good man. I refuse to lose you to someone else’s devices for my want of trying.”
William, Prince of Orange, is pushed abruptly into power and the realization that he needs a wife, and an heir, and, well, some company. At a crisis in both of their reigns, a mutually beneficial marriage is arranged between him and Dana Katherine, the young Queen of Sweden. Cool civility hesitantly warms as the two come to know one another, but not is all as it seems, and their new positions, even fortified, are more precarious than as first appears.

His gifts to her pitch and yaw with a speed and intensity that is entirely unpredictable. One Valentine’s day early in their partnership, he left a dozen red roses and a large box of fancy chocolates on her desk, and brushed off her thanks with a dismissive “Got ‘em at Lost and Found.” There was the Apollo 11 keychain, when she was ill. He’d written it off as just a “cool keychain,” but she’d believed in the meaning she’d found in it, and treasured it ever since as if it were sentimental jewelry."

“He misses you.” That made her look up. She hadn’t been expecting him to say that. “I mean he doesn’t always say it but I can tell he does. Do you… do you miss him?” Will asked tentatively. She never wanted him to feel as if he couldn’t speak about his father in front of her. She never wanted to be that kind of parent that couldn’t bear to hear their ex mentioned. And so she tried her best to sound calm as she answered:
“Of course I do.” She saw the hope fill his eyes and suddenly realised what this conversation was really about. She felt a sense of oncoming dread sink deep into her stomach.It's revival era reunion fic with bonus William added in. Has it been done before and in much better ways - yes. Will it stop me writing it - no. Scully is in for a ride of a weekend!
