"Is anyone there? We’re from the Commonwealth Navy; we’re here to help…” A deep breath rattled in tense-tight lungs. “We saw your sign outside. We don’t want to hurt you; I promise.”
Another long silence followed; long enough that Laura started to wonder if she was talking to the empty air after all. A glance aside showed Ingersoll was staring at her sceptically, while the others were still hesitant, uncertain. But when she looked back to the balconies again, that shape shifted once more.
“Do… d-do you have medicine?”
The voice was tiny; each word shook with fear, falling down from far above. It sounded… young, Laura couldn’t help thinking, painfully so. A child, alone in this colossal wreck?
February, 2084. The CNS Bar Harbour, frigate of the Commonwealth of Atlantic Canada, receives a distress call on an old-world frequency.

She didn’t, it seemed, want to give him an answer. So he gave her a sigh instead. “Those robots aren’t a challenge to me, or my friends. Nothing you’re doing will stop us.”
“I… I know,” she breathed; her lower lip quavered just a little. “I’ve run the simulations, hundreds of thousands of times.” Her body seemed to shrink back. “No matter what I do, the outcome is always the same.”
He stepped forwards. “Then why keep fighting?”
“B-because I have to,” she forced out, her whole form starting to shake. “I was created to continue the war, to continue his conquest, no matter the cost.”
Dr. Eggman is dead. The war for the planet is over. And yet, in a bunker at the end of the world, Shadow finds someone still trying to fight on.

"You… you okay, little man?” She hated how her voice sounded. She wasn’t good with kids; that was Freddy’s job; but Freddy was just a decapitated head right now, his power drained, sitting in the backseat, and all the other animatronics were gone.
Still, her words seemed to do something. Gregory shifted, leaning back slightly from the window, and then turned slowly to face her instead. Her chest clenched just a little as his eyes came into view; there was saltwater there, in front of the hazel, threatening to spill out over cheeks that were starting to quiver.
Her throat felt dry. All the time in the mall, with the robots on the fritz and her at her worst, bouncing between taking her frustrations out and whatever Vanny did, she hadn’t seen him cry.
In the immediate aftermath, it's just the two of them.
