    Summary

Elphaba recalled the quiet, stolen moments in their room when Galinda’s laughter was softer, her toothy smiles unguarded. She thought of the nights when Galinda whispered into the dark, a safety in truth previously unknown to her.

Galinda’s beauty did not come without a price. It was carved from pain and practice, and held together by sheer will.

Elphaba vowed at that moment to find a way to tell her that she not only knew this, but that she loved her all the more for it.

    Summary

“Improper? Oz forbid.” Elphaba’s voice was amused, a low, rich sound that sent an unwelcome shiver down Galinda’s spine. “Is this your way of asking me to go to the Lurlinemas formal?”

Galinda opened her mouth to retort, then shut it again. The idea was ridiculous - absurd! - and yet she found herself unusually flustered. She waved a dismissive hand, the movement too abrupt to pass for nonchalance. “Oh, as if you’d come.”

“I might,” Elphaba said. She was watching Galinda now, her pen still poised mid-air. “If you asked.”

Galinda could not immediately think of a response. Her mind was too caught on that word, might, the way it rolled so carelessly off Elphaba’s tongue, the faint suggestion of possibility in it. A part of her, an annoyingly persistent part, latched onto the idea like a burr.

    Summary

Galinda tilted her head, her perfect smile widening as a group of students waved at her from across the room. Elphaba caught it - the briefest stutter in her expression, a hesitation so fleeting it might have been imagined. But then the smile settled, as smooth and bright as ever, though it lingered just long enough to suggest it wasn’t entirely effortless. Elphaba wondered if anyone else noticed. Probably not. Galinda was too good at being seen and not seen, at deflecting attention in just the right way - like sunlight on glass, Elphaba thought - dazzling, fleeting, impossible to pin down. Elphaba, on the other hand, felt too solid by half, every glance sticking to her like burrs she couldn’t shake off.

    "You’re trembling," Glinda says.
And- despite the tears in both their eyes, Elphaba can’t help her tiny chuckle. It’s ironic, after all. That’s usually her line.
