Summary

Summary
He has to cut this thing out from him. It’s a fungus growing and spreading and rotting inside of him. It started empty, dormant, and as he got older and far more ridiculed and seen, that dormant thing took over the space hollowed out in his chest and made it its own. If someone offered him a scalpel, he might try to cut carefully around it, extract every piece of the fungus and leave a gaping hole that he could fill with something. Anything.
Sometimes Spencer wishes he could tear this part of him out; little does he know that thing is his autism. He learns to live alongside it.

“Is the Red Hood’s helmet watertight?” someone asked, and Jason was cold and dripping and on the ground next to Dick and he wasn’t breathing.
“No,” Tim’s voice was tight.
“We need to take it off,” Lagoon Boy's words were met by a handful of yells, both in person and through the comms.
“This is the Red Hood,” Shazam said. “They say he has explosives in his helmet. It might explode if you try to take it,”
“Seriously?”
Dick reached towards the helmet to unlock it with trembling hands, to everyone’s alarm.
“The explosives.” Superboy interjected.
“Connor,” Tim cut in sharply. “We know what we’re doing,”I had thoughts about Jason being super cagey about his identity as the Red Hood to the point that he has explosives in his helmet to prevent people from taking it off, and the vulnerability of the Batfam members knowing the ins and outs of his helmet and how to take it off despite it all.

I think about this fic a lot - can't believe I haven't bookmarked it. Absolutely top-tier writing and characterisation. Tim rescues Jason from a vat of death and gets truth-serumed. Bruce goes to therapy and is a very good autistic man who was raised by an emotionally-repressed Brit, trying his best.

Jason reels back. Percy can perfectly picture his startled stupid blink. "Sorry," he says. "Are you—propositioning me?"
"I think you're the first person to use the word proposition in about a hundred years," Percy muses.
"Here?" Jason gestures to their grimy surroundings. "Now?"
"I was in the area," Percy says. He kicks a sneaker at Jason's boot. "Come on. What were you doing tonight anyway?"
Jason sighs again, slower and controlled. "Running shit for Sofia," he says finally. "Keeping the city from falling into lawlessness. Getting catcalled by smartass should-be sleeping paramedics, apparently."
Percy grins guilelessly. He is without guile. "Is it working?"
Jason smacks his open palm against the helmet. "Jesus Christ."

Jason Todd grew up with a fundamental fear of being seen. Not in the sense of shyness, but in the sense of shame. He supposed, if he wished to contemplate the fear’s origins, he might start where most tragedies do:
The house he grew up in.
Where the act of wanting was as good as a death sentence to that desire.
He supposed he might even make an argument for the statement “people become what they are called”. He thinks that might have some merit, looking back.
What he fears most, (like most other people), is how obvious it is to others. The fear itself.

Thanks to a rogue meta, the batfam gets to watch Jason's memories like a movie; and Jason just really wants a family again. But you cannot be loved if you aren't known, and well... if circumstances provide? might as well take the chance, right?
