No I’m not, you don’t say, it’s freezing in here. The light from his array of computer screens dances across his goggles. You think of dog eyes, glowing green in the dark.

He thinks about the colorful pom-poms, the dances, the songs — but they aren't important to him, not really; what he remembers is the wave of lightsticks, the anonymous crowd pressing into him from every direction, the music pulsing through him and into the ground. For a moment there he was just another component in the electric circuit of Ichigo Berry. For a moment there he wasn't Yagami Light at all.

Midora tries asking about the names; asking about how Shizuka plans to avoid the police (Ryuk had made it seem very difficult, but no one's knocking down their door yet, so her human must be doing something right); asking about the old hag who was Shizuka's first kill — that does get a reaction, finally: an anime figurine hurled at her and a fresh bout of silent crying.
"Uh," Midora says, blinking.
"Oh god, I'm sorry," Shizuka chokes, grabbing for a tissue. "Fuck. Did that hurt?"

Huh. Okay, yeah: now that she’s looking properly, it’s obvious they’re different people. Still! She’d have guessed, like, fraternal twin or something. He doesn’t know Ryuzaki at all? They’re wearing the same outfit! They even slouch the same!
“Should I be offended that I’ve been mistaken for him?” asks not-Ryuzaki, pushing a thumb into his lower lip, eyes suddenly aglow with mirth.
“You’re not a weird depressed detective freak,” Misa dismisses. He does seem close — just missing the second and third words in that phrase — but he’s so much more tolerable than the real Ryuzaki that she is willing to overlook this. “You actually go outside, for one thing.”
Or: the one where Misa runs into a stranger at the shopping mall who, weirdly enough, looks just like L. Which means she has to introduce them!
What could possibly go wrong?

Once Misa’s fixed the puffiness around her eyes — allergies, ugh — she steps out of the bathroom to find that the table’s already cleared.
“Did you throw it all away?” she asks.
“Obviously,” Light says. “It’s gone bad.”
Misa is pretty sure dissolving into sand isn’t what people mean when they say food has gone bad, but it’s a reassuring lie. A kind lie, because Light is kind. “Okay,” she says. “I ordered sushi.”
Or: Almost two months after L, Watari, and Rem have been eliminated, the Amane-Yagami residence on Christmas Eve begins to exhibit symptoms of being haunted by some sort of ghost.

It’s much easier to fall in love with someone and make them your soulmate instead, his mom had explained to him softly, rubbing her wrist. Much easier to get a tattoo with them, rather than hoping it’ll show up on your skin at first touch. Maybe even more romantic. Your dad and I love each other, Light. Who cares if he’s not perfect? He’s good enough for me.
The last time a teacher called Light’s work good enough was in fifth grade. Light had sabotaged his swivel chair afterwards and he’d had to take a week off.
Light Yagami is too old to believe in soulmates, even if the letter on the television screen sometimes makes him wish otherwise.
Misa Amane doesn’t remember a time when she wasn’t looking for her soulmate; he has to be out there, has to, because why else would there be a hole in her ribcage?
Or: Light and Misa are meant for each other. This makes everything infinitely worse.
