the world ends when tommy is fourteen years old, which is rather ironic considering fourteen-year-olds are often known for saying such things and having it pushed aside. there was a phenomenon, right before everyone realized that the apocalypse was actually real. anyone over eight and under seventeen could be found sleepwalking in the middle of the night, eyes bloodshot and terrified. when finally awoken, each child screamed about the way there was no rain and no night and everyone was so, so alone.

A moment later, there was a short rustling before it went quiet.
Hua Cheng's demeanor was more upsetting than the rustling leaves. The sound could have come from anything, but Hua Cheng had a very blank expression on his face. The oppressive weight that Xie Lian had so briefly felt began to creep over the forest floor. It rose up like water, wading up their knees, torsos, and up to their heads.
Xie Lian stepped toward Hua Cheng, reaching out a hand to touch his arm. For some reason, he felt like he had to stop him from going after that feeling, or maybe it was an urge to keep him nearby.
When Xie Lian’s fingers touched the skin of Hua Cheng's wrist, he turned to look down at him. His eyes most certainly were red.

Xie Lian is a prince of a city whose people are being tormented by an unknown, unseen beast. Seeking new lands to run to, Xie Lian begins a small village in the woods, hoping to prepare to move his people away from the dreaded forest outside of their walls. It was there, just a stone’s throw away. Shang Qinghua’s breath was shuddery and weak, shallowly entering and leaving his chest. His palms were sweating, so he swiped them on his pants a few times. It wasn’t effective, but Shang Qinghua didn’t try any more. He pushed himself through the underbrush and crawled forward.
And there it was, lying in a small patch of grass. A dragon.
