It was Lucas who seriously brought up the idea for the first time during their Senior year. Because what if they just went?
Now after months of planning, and their hard-earned high school diplomas collected, the trip was officially on. Their bags were packed, the car engine was rumbling beneath them, the sun was shining, poppy music playing on the car-radio. Max was so ready to leave their cursed town in the rear-view mirror for the next three weeks. And if all went well, one day they might not have to return at all. Lucas picked up the Stephen King book they were in the middle of — Salem's Lot — and pulled out a worn envelope he'd tucked between the pages for safekeeping.
"I still have this," he told Max, returning back to the bed. He turned the sealed envelope in his hand, his eyes tracing the letters of his name that she'd written onto it. By this point, he'd done that more times than he could count.
"I haven't opened it, cause in my mind, that would mean that you were gone for real, and I don't think that, I don't want to think that," he explained to her, feeling dread rising in him, constricting his throat as his rambly sentence went on.
"But after last night, after how close of a call it was…"
"If something like that happens again, I don't know if I could bear it, not knowing what your last words were."

Summary
Everything happens in flashes, after Max gets back. She’s here, she’s alive, Lucas is holding her; then they’re outside the rift, and it’s just the two of them, and Lucas should know what to say, but he doesn’t; then he’s in the cramped van while Steve and Dustin trip over themselves to catch Max up on everything she’s missed; and now he’s here, watching Max update Dustin on her time in Vecna’s mind as quickly as she can speak without her voice giving out.
Well, she’s telling Lucas, too, in theory, but he feels like he’s ten miles away. He’s not sure if he even wants to know everything that happened in their lifetime apart. He should want to, because it’s Max—he should want to know everything about her. He should be proud of her for eking out a life in the wilderness while he sat at her bedside.
He doesn’t know what’s wrong with him.

And it’s just as miraculous as it is every time Lucas feels it. This tiny, beating proof that Max is alive. The steady drumming against his skin that feels like solid fucking proof that there’s something above the sky, that there’s something in the world that’s worth fighting for.
