Summary
Dennis lays in the bed with a stillness so absolute it feels staged. A ventilator breathes for him in measured sighs, the sound too rhythmic to be human. It almost looks like he’s a kid pretending to sleep in the backseat of his parents’ car, hoping to be carried inside by strong paternal arms.
Robby would do anything for that to be the case. Instead, it is sedation that has smoothed away the sharpness from Dennis’s features.
It is a heart attack that has made him so still.
Or,
Dennis Whitaker fails to clear and gets shocked by a defibrillator. He takes it as a punishment for sinful eyes that can't seem to look away from Dr. Robby and decides not to tell anyone. The ER keeps moving, but Dennis's heart doesn't. It terribly, horribly doesn't.

Summary
Dennis had looked at him with those eyes and said, “I just need you to know, in case something happens, I just need you to know that I—” and Robby had kissed him before he could finish because he couldn’t hear the rest of that sentence, couldn’t hear Dennis say he loved him out loud without also saying it back, and he hadn’t been ready to say it back then.
He’s ready now, though. He’s been ready for weeks. He’s been ready every morning when he wakes up and Dennis is still there, every night when Dennis falls asleep on his chest and Robby stays awake just to watch him breathe. He’s going to say it tonight. He’s going to pull over somewhere, maybe that overlook by the river, and he’s going to take Dennis’s face in his hands and he’s going to say it. Three words, simple words.
or dennis whitaker's last words were technically “you're more important” which is either the most romantic thing ever or the dumbest thing ever (both)

Summary
Dr. Robby is too old for this. Too old to be losing sleep over a resident.
It starts slowly. Favour and conversation. Things that last longer than they should.
He tells himself it isn’t anything. Just a temporary lapse in judgment. But the way Dennis looks at him makes everything harder.
And Robby, who has spent his entire life being careful, realizes he may have already passed the line of no return.

“I was gonna take him home,” Santos cuts his thoughts off, her voice all playful that suggests she knows exactly which buttons she’s pressing. She’s watching the way Robby’s hand hasn’t moved from the air around Dennis’s waist. “But if you want to---”
“I do,” Robby says immediately.
The words are out before he can filter them, too fucking raw for someone who is supposed to be just a colleague. He catches himself, and swallows the sudden tang of his own desperation, and drops his voice. “If that’s okay. With you. With him.”

Summary
Dennis hears the revving of a motorbike engine, disturbing his reverie and making him frown. It’s late — who in their right mind is out driving around on a motorbike? He waits for it to pass, so he can slip back into thinking about Robby and dinner and what they might do after dinner, when the engine cuts out. Dennis lifts his head, eyes opening, taking a second to adjust—
“Need a ride?” Robby asks him, holding out a spare helmet to Dennis. "Jack told me you only just left.”
He steps forward, taking the helmet from Robby. “So you’ve been spying on me?”
“The whole time I’ve been gone.” Robby nods, as Dennis swings himself onto the back of the bike. He winds his arms around Robby’s waist, tucks himself in against his back, and contents himself with the familiar warmth of his body as Robby starts the bike up again.

In October, Robby comes home. Dennis tries to decide what that means for them both.

Summary
“I don’t know what I want to do.” Dennis admits. He looks over at Robby, staring at the side of his face. They’ve been closer than this before, but being in the car together feels strangely intimate. “What would you do?”
“If it was me… I’d at least go for that dinner. But I’m not you. You need to do what’s best for you, Dennis.”
There it is again, his name from Robby’s mouth. It makes his attention linger, still staring at Robby’s face. Dennis is once again overwhelmed with the urge to just bury his face in Robby’s neck and pretend the world doesn’t exist, but that’s not the grown up thing to do. He squeezes his eyes shut for a second, rubs his temples with his fingertips as Robby continues, “Carry your patients with you as much or as little as you like. Find your balance. But remember that you’re human.”
Dennis opens his eyes to the countryside fading away and the city bleeding in. He knows Robby is right. That’s what he needs: balance.
In his last year of med school, Dennis learns to let go of the guilt that plagues him.

Summary
Dr. Robby and Whitaker try to ease each other's worries, and they do, but not in the way either of them expected.
*****
It was a hard decision to make, but Robby decided he didn't want to risk his new intern, who he definitely needed at work tomorrow, catching pneumonia.
He zipped up his hoodie, mildly annoyed at himself for not just ignoring it when he had the chance.
“Whitaker, listen. I don't want you calling in sick tomorrow, so…” Robby took a few steps back and scratched his head. “Why don't we get you someplace warm, and you can ask me whatever you want there? I don't live far from here.”

“Do you actually, y’know, like him?”
Dennis bristled. “What’s that supposed to mean?”
Santos put up her hands defensively. “Hey, I’ve got nothing against the guy. Robby is a great doctor and a good boss. I just… I mean he is like twice your age, man.”
Dennis simply shrugged. “Maybe I have a thing for crows' feet, ever thought about that?
