Summary
If you ask anyone who knows even the slightest bit about hockey, they would say that Shane Hollander is one of the nicest players out there. A generational talent with talks of a dynasty.
If you ask Ilya Rozanov, he’d announce loudly that Shane Hollander is the best thing that happened to him. Don’t get it wrong; he’d still call him boring and polite and “very Canadian” and only the second best hockey player in the league. But there’d be a sparkle in his eye and a soft smile on his lips, and it wouldn’t be hard to see the pure adoration the man had for Shane Hollander. He’d mock him with “golden boy Shane Hollander,” but there’d be a thread of something hidden in his voice. Almost as if he doesn’t truly believe it.
Or, Shane Hollander left Montreal. He's not sure if all of him did, though.

I gave them so many years, Ilya,” Shane finally says, eyes lowered to the tile below. “I gave them three cups. My best hockey. And they couldn’t even…”
He trails off. No words seem to fit into the gaping hurt that his former team had left behind. Shane’s been covering it up, haphazardly placing band-aids onto bullet wounds and foolishly hoping they’d heal, but he knows it’s still there. Festering like a bruise, black and blue and agonizing.
mr. i need to b perfect all the time……man i need to stop relating to him guys this is getting outta hand

That he’d never be himself, doomed to live a half life in the shadow of what he truly wanted – that feeling of completeness, of acceptance, of someone seeing who he really was and loving him anyway.

Summary
“Come on,” Comeau says. “Are we all just supposed to pretend it's normal that you’re still playing house with Ilya Rozanov?”
“Gil—” J.J. says, but Shane doesn’t want him to finish that sentence, to pull Comeau gently off the ledge he’s steering himself toward. Shane wants to push him, kicking and screaming, to make them say it to his fucking face. That after all this time, they still hate him for the heinous crime of falling in love.
“We’ve been married for two years,” Shane says. “I’m not sure that qualifies as playing house. I mean, it’s longer than you were with your first wife, isn’t it?”
Or: Shane reunites with his former teammates at J.J.'s bachelor party. He's finally ready to say (and maybe punch) his piece.

Bookmarker's Notes
Something that most people don’t realize about Shane is he knows how to throw a punch. When he was fifteen, his mother sat him down and taught him how.
She said it was for the ice, that he needed to know how to hold his own before going pro, stressing all the while that he was far more valuable out of the penalty box. For hockey, she kept insisting. Just for hockey.
It wasn’t that Shane thought she was lying. Yuna Hollander imparting hockey wisdom on him wasn’t anything new.
But when he got older, he did wonder if she was teaching him for self defense. In case a racist or a crazed fan or a combination of the two came at him and no one was there to shield him.

Hi Mr. Hayden,
We’re pretty sure you’ve never noticed, so you might find this funny. Over the years, a few of us have been piecing together the Rozanov-Hollander saga from your fanmails.
In mine, Ilya Rozanov was chatting in Russian in the background saying some very colorful things about someone's something.
For a second, I actually wondered if he was your secret lover. But at this point, aren’t we all just second-guessing?
or: Hayden Pike finally realizes he never actually double-checked any of his videos
