Faith has never come easy to Beatrice-- it always was a business, a honed skill, a shield against the empty lonely childhood and a grating aching adolescence shunted out of sight by her disappointed parents-- but she’s had faith in Ava since the minute they stood outside of a tomb in the Vatican catacombs and Beatrice realized that she brought the dynamite as a backup to Ava out of habit instead of actual worry. She’d always known Ava would do what they needed, would succeed and find her way through her own fear, and Ava hadn’t disappointed her.
Michael came back. Lilith came back. Ava hasn’t disappointed her yet, and she won’t start now.

Okay, maybe what she hears is Saturdays are for the boys and maybe it’s from a bunch of guys with biceps the size of their heads. But she likes it enough to remember it as she strolls the rest of the way home so she can tell Beatrice.

Beatrice frowns up at the ceiling at the turn of phrase — Where does Ava get this stuff? — “I’m well aware.”
“You are?” Ava sounds genuinely surprised.
“Yes?” says Beatrice, wondering if Ava’s been concussed at training. “You bought the farm — as you so inelegantly put it — twice, and then you came back to life, also twice, and here we are.” Beatrice refuses to think about the words as she says them, keeps the memories at arm’s length. “And I think you’ll find the expression is ‘bought the farm’.
“I’m so confused,” says Ava, “what are you talking about?”—
After Ava's return, Bea is struggling. Ava tries to make things better by buying them a farm.

She brought the tranq, just in case.
From what little they know of Ava Silva, she was not a devout Catholic, nor was she from the OCS. She was just some poor dead girl down in the crypts of the church, a body being prepared for burial with no one in the world to claim her. Beatrice tried hard not to let the idea of it play on her sympathies. They had a job to do, one more important than worrying over the fate of a girl who was already dead.
Though for a girl who was already dead, she was a loud screamer and an almost embarrassingly pitiful fighter. She barely escaped her fight with the rather large and grotesque-looking demon before it vanished and then of course she immediately tried to leave. Tried to run.
Beatrice grabbed, spun, and tranquilized her in one fluid movement, shrugging a shoulder when the others looked at her with varying degrees of surprise and confusion.

Beatrice is an adult, Beatrice can handle herself, Beatrice could probably lay out everyone in this train car without displacing a single hair on her head, and Ava is the mess that dragged her out of her life. Beatrice doesn’t need Ava to save her, doesn’t need saving at all when it comes to a charming-looking hot guy with wavy hair and a good smile, but then he leans closer to Beatrice and Ava feels the halo flare in her back and stomps over, slings her arms around Beatrice, hooks her chin over her shoulder.
