He mustered up the confidence to meet Mike’s eyes. Slowly, and quietly, he spoke. “You aren’t useless. You never were and you’re never going to be.”
Mike’s eyelids appeared heavier. His stare seemed to be behind some type of blur, and Will couldn’t tell if that was a good thing or a bad thing.
“If that was true,” he said, voice low. “Then I wouldn’t even be worried about it in the first place.”

Or; After the proposition of Nancy's plan—titled, "The Crawl"—is set in motion for the first time, Will is forced to confront memories that had been previously exiled from his mind, and Mike's repeated attempts to replace Hopper's role and scout the Upside Down himself aren't helping.

Will’s moral compass ticked.
“Okay.” He said, knowing he didn’t have a single assignment uncompleted.
If moral compasses were meant to point to True North, his was pointing in the complete opposite direction.
Will didn’t notice.

Weird emotions bubble in Mike's heart, disturbing topics arise at the expense of Will's comfort, and feelings are realized because of an accidental walk-in on the beloved Rockin' Robin and a Candy Striper.

He didn’t stop running until he hit his father's chest. Thin arms stretched around him, welcoming him into an embrace. He felt fingers trail up his spine until they settled in his hair, dividing the strands into thick locks.
“Do you understand?” His father asked.
Will nodded into his chest, hiccuping through tears.
The moments that passed were spent in this position. Warm, comforting fatherhood. A guide through this unforgiving world. The hand that both slaps and cradles you. Breaths were short and uneven on one side, and relaxed on the other—victorious. Will’s head laid on his chest, and right beside it was a medal.
“Will?”
“Yes?”
“Don’t even ask to leave this tower again.”

At first, it felt impossible to move on. All the deaths that happened, the long-term injuries he was subjected to—he thought they would haunt him forever, even after Vecna’s death. But he did move on, everyone did. And moving on included cutting some people out of his life.
However, one day, after 2 decades, Will heard it again—Vecna’s voice.

Or; 20 years after Vecna was defeated and everyone separated, Will started hearing him again as an adult. Is Vecna back, or is Will descending into insanity due to a mid-life crisis?

Will found himself apologizing. The words spilled out of him into an incoherent sentence obstructed by the strong wind. He tried to comfort the boy by caressing his dirtied face. His skin, so unique, so delicate, was hidden under layers of bruises and blood. It killed the innocence Will saw in him.
He waited for the boy to go still.

“Alright, I stole it.” Mike confessed, turning back to Will. “But she won’t even find out! We’ll be back in like ten minutes. Fifteen at most.”
For the first time in an entire week, Will smiled. The corners of his mouth curled up, letting his bunny teeth peak through his lips. Seeing Mike like this, all cheeky and delinquent, was amusing. It was almost like seeing Mike from the past, and that nostalgia was refreshing.
“Okay, I’ll come. Ten minutes?” He asked, brushing away the bangs stuck to his face in an attempt to look more normal.
“Ten minutes.”

Or; After sensing how tense Will is, Mike offers to take him to Lover’s Lake. Confessions are made, fights ensue.
