    Summary

“The blood in there,” the inquiring agent continues, luridly curious. That rarely goes anywhere productive. “If Jasper didn’t eat [Anatole], d’you think he at least fucked him? Wish we’d been able to haul him into custody. I would’ve liked a firsthand account of what that’s like.”

“How about we ask Ranghar?” Klaas suggests, not bothering to lower his voice. He knows Sam can hear him no matter what—and wants Sam to hear. “He’s been sucking vamp cock for almost as long as he’s been on the Order’s payroll. Raglan James’s, too, for all we—”

Sam turns on his heel and exits the bathroom so swiftly that every agent in the room jumps out of their skin. He doesn’t bother with anything as theatrical as locking eyes with each of them in turn; instead, he zeroes in on Klaas with his coldest glare, which…has no effect.

“I’ve spent a great deal of time and energy making sure that the latter doesn’t happen,” Sam says. “Agent James’s moral compass is cracked.”

Klaas shrugs calmly at Sam. He’s still too smug and unimpressed. “And the former, Barclay? You won’t try to deny it? What about your compass?”

    Summary

Helen’s colleague has traced Armand, Daniel, and Daniel’s youngest daughter to Devoción on Livingston Street in Downtown Brooklyn.  She’d even followed her first text with the offer to have Jay do the stake-out for Rashid given what day it is, which is kind, but putting a mortal agent on a job that’s already rife with fuckery is asking for even more fuckery.  Daniel would’ve eaten the guy if he’d noticed him parked in the street outside the coffee shop.  As it is, Armand has already noticed Rashid and sent him a cheerful mental wave, because of course he has.

In this brave new world they inhabit, Devoción has decided it’s the kind of franchise to put out a VAMPIRES WELCOME sign in the front windows of its cafés.  And that’s the brash display that Daniel’s youngest has decided to put on in order to piss off her older half-sister in choosing a venue for this public meeting, Rashid types in the open note on his phone.  It’s the sort of thing he’s supposed to notice in his new role, after all.  He hopes this doesn’t drag on until closing, because it’d be nice to get back to Sam so that they can try to snag tickets for a show.

    Summary

There’s a knock on the office door. Armand is standing there, contrite. “May I come in?”

“It’s your fuckin’ office,” Sam mumbles into the palm of his left hand, typing with his right.

“Of course,” Armand sighs, strolling in, his hands in his pockets. “Still, manners. May I ask…”

“Ask what?” Sam replies. He stops what he’s doing, sitting up straight in his chair. “A favor?”

“Yes, in fact,” Armand continues, “which is why I hesitate. But it builds on groundwork already laid, so I’m hoping it won’t be…too taxing.”

“You’re starting to make me fear it’s something dreadful, maître,” Sam admits, wringing his hands in his lap. “All of this hesitation.”

“Since we’re going to let Claudia join the coven in a little over a month, I thought that perhaps we might…repurpose that play you wrote.”

    Summary

Sam doesn’t extract himself from his nest of blankets and pillows on the walk-in closet floor when he hears Rashid’s key in the front door. Even when he hears Rashid call out to him, asking if he’s had enough blood bags to tide him over until they can go out to hunt, all he does is roll onto his back and stare at the fairy lights he’s wound around the sheet-draped clothing racks overhead. Sam reaches toward the nearest wall; his nails graze one of the sofa cushions. Using a closet to structure your fort surely counts as cheating, but he’s too depressed to care.

That’s likely why Sam doesn’t feel insulted when Rashid heads to the kitchen first. Judging by the sounds he makes while pottering around in there, the sequence of events goes like this: open the fridge, pull out blood bags, open the cupboard, get down a pair of mugs and…something made of cardboard that sounds like it contains sand. Rashid hasn’t been a vampire for that long, around a month, so there are still a handful of dry goods from his human existence. Puzzlingly, Rashid goes back to the fridge, pulls out the milk carton, and fetches yet another mug.

    Summary

Armand sets the black cat back down, folding his arms across his chest as he stares at the vintage poster hung over the mantelpiece, likewise featuring a black cat, captioned TRICK OR TREAT. He studies the pumpkin wearing a witch’s hat set in front of that, as well as the matching one at the opposite end of the mantelpiece from the cat figurine, and then swaps the pumpkin in the middle with the cat.

“Stop it!” Sam protests, swatting Armand’s calves with the broom. “Switch them back!”

“You want me to cut out those pennants so you can…do what with them?” Armand asks.

Sam indicates the beads already tacked to the edge of the mantelpiece. “String them up.”

Armand grimaces. “You’re a diplomat’s companion. At least pretend to have the taste.”

“That’s enough, maître,” Sam sighs, whacking Armand’s heels with the broom. “Get out.”

    Summary

“Once a blood bag, always a blood bag,” Daniel remarks, taunting, “eh, Rashid?”

“Don’t be crude. That wasn’t part of his job description in Dubai,” Armand replies.

“Sam is prone to forgetting to eat while we work,” Rashid says tartly. “Excuse us.”

“Going to commit the Fourth on Daniel first chance I get,” Sam mutters as they exit.

    Summary

Rashid reclines in the grass next to Sam, lulled by the tapping of Sam’s thumbnails against the glassy, glowing surface of his iPhone as he writes. Watching Sam perch in the window seat upstairs over the past several nights with his laptop […] had been a lovely diversion during the sheer frustration that had been learning to produce fire.

However, the task that Sam has assigned Rashid tonight as he continues to whittle away at his prose is tougher. Rashid finds that making flames in his hands is one thing, but causing the tinder and logs to catch fire in the earthenware chimenea a few feet away is another.

Sam sets his phone down when Rashid huffs in frustration, rolling onto his side so that he can set one hand in the middle of Rashid’s chest. “Some vampires never make that leap, and it’s fine,” he says reassuringly. “There are gradations of ability to use the Fire Gift. You have it.”

“Armand’s finding-the-vulnerability-within-the-object advice is rubbish,” Rashid replies, tearing his gaze away from his target so he can look at Sam. He covers Sam’s hand with one of his own, tracing the backs of Sam’s fingers. “I refuse to believe I’m worse at this than Louis.”

    Summary

Rashid is too exhausted to think about how odd it is that there’s light emanating from within his flat. He unlocks the door, tows his rollerboard inside, and then stares in jet-lagged shock at the baffling scene in front of him. Raglan could’ve warned him about this. Raglan should’ve warned him about this. Instead, he’s walking in to find an intruder curled up in the corner of his sofa watching an offbeat show with Bill Hader in it.

A familiar intruder, though. One he’s so glad to see that his heart’s abruptly in his throat.

Sam Barclay hits pause, turns to face Rashid, and blinks in surprise. “You’re home early.”

“Not by much,” Rashid says, propping his suitcase against the wall. “Why are you here?”

Sam scoots away from the arm of the sofa as Rashid approaches. “They didn’t tell you?”

“Nobody tells me nothing,” Rashid quotes, smiling at Sam as he plops down next to him.

Rolling his eyes, Sam glances at the telly. “Rather watch Hot Fuzz for old times’ sake?”

    Summary

Daniel Molloy, following Lestat’s entourage on account of the documentary he’s filming, has in fact shown his face in the crowd. Raglan had been right about Sam’s presence being sufficient incentive for Daniel to attempt to catch him for comment on Paris once he’s offstage, maybe—or to assume that some other party might also show up because of Sam’s presence, in order to either speak with him or to enact vengeance.

Sam doesn’t need to flip any more switches or control the rest of what’s happening with his music. From here on out, it’s automated, although he’d taken into account he might have to lock it down at any point and simply watch his mark (or marks) if he’d happened to catch sight of him (or them) early. He probably seems distracted now even if the crowd can’t see his face; he’s not moving anymore in a way that anyone in their right mind would consider expressive. His stillness would strike Daniel as inhuman if Daniel happened to be paying attention to the stage.

Daniel hasn’t been paying attention to the performance. His back is turned, and he’s looking at something else.

    Summary

[City Lights isn’t] the most convenient rendezvous point they could’ve chosen—but if daylight outings are necessary, then Armand getting to spend time in places he actually fucking likes counts for a lot. He hadn’t gotten to do a lot of that when he was with Louis. Daniel finds Armand tucked in a corner chair with books scattered at his feet. He drops to a crouch in front of Armand, tugging the copy of Four Quartets out of his hand, and smiles.

Armand looks at him like they’ve been apart for days instead of hours. Honestly, that look on Armand’s face? It’s the best fucking drug Daniel’s ever had. Armand’s blood? Transcendent, sure, but those eyes. He leans forward in the chair, pulling Daniel’s arms around his waist—not that Daniel needs to be told twice what to do with his hands, either. They kiss like that until a patron elsewhere in the stacks clears their throat.

“Grow up!” Daniel shouts at their unseen critic, nuzzling Armand’s cheek while Armand laughs softly in his ear. “Bookstores aren’t for prudes!”

“Hello, lover,” Armand murmurs, running his fingers through Daniel’s windswept hair. “What did Scherr say to your next interview write-ups?”

    Summary

“Good evening, Raglan,” Sam says, smirking even though Raglan can’t see him. “Sam here. Are we the third wheel, or are you about to add—”

“Jesus fuck,” Daniel Molloy blurts, sounding exactly like he’s sounded in every interview that Sam has watched or streamed. “The Sam Barclay.”

“Uh, yeah,” Sam replies. He’s going to have a hard time keeping his composure if Rashid breaks down laughing any harder than he already has.

“What a touching introduction,” Raglan says impatiently. “Rashid, are you there? This is your number the last time I checked, so I’d expect—”

“Is that my old friend Real Rashid?” Daniel cuts in with relish. “It’s so good to hear your voice. I’ve really, really been looking forward to this.”

“I can’t say the same, Daniel,” Rashid deadpans; Sam realizes it’s the first time he’s ever addressed him by his name. “Yes, Raglan. I’m here.”

Benítez tilts his head a fraction closer, conspiratorial. “It’s a pity our devices have been confiscated for the time that we’re sequestered here. I would’ve suggested sneaking off to exchange more music recommendations since you’ve demonstrated taste.”

“Dally any longer, and I fear that neither of us will be in anyone’s good graces,” Thomas replies as Ray sweeps past them. “But I would’ve…” He glances furtively at Benítez; for an instant, it’s the thrill of misbehaving at seminary again. “I would’ve liked that.”

“There’s a computer in the office.”

“We’d have to cross Sister Agnes.”

“Ah. Never mind that idea, then.”

Oh, the things I would’ve liked had we been young men together, Thomas thinks wistfully as they approach the dining room. I would’ve liked you.

    Summary

Sam waits until the door closes, pitched into darkness, to roll away from the wall and squint blearily at his new minder. He’s afraid he might cry.

Armand looks like hell. His unkempt curls frame his face, unspeakably lovely for that fact. His shoes hit the floor. “Starving yourself?” he asks.

Sam shrugs, setting his jaw as his eyes start to sting. “I let him do it,” he grits out. “Let him do the thing that fuckin’ got him killed. Fair’s fair.”

“Rashid’s death is fair,” Armand says, sliding under the covers next to Sam, “because he knew the risks. He became a lawbreaker in your stead.”

“You’re saying my death wouldn’t be,” Sam whispers tremulously as Armand gathers him close, pressing his face against Armand’s exposed neck.

“I understand that you’re grieving,” Armand whispers back, “but I refuse to shoulder that just because you’ve forgotten everything we discussed.”

“Fuck right off. I have not,” Sam snarls, both ashamed and relieved that the provocation is enough to make him sink his fangs in Armand’s neck.

    Summary

Paola has noticed the fabric-covered diary on the desk. She lifts the corner, peers beneath it, and then glances wide-eyed at Jesse. “Is that…”

“I forgot you’re a superfan of Daniel’s book,” Jesse sighs, tossing the empty blood bag, biting the next. “Yep. That’s one of Claudia’s travelogues.”

Paola lets the corner of the fabric drop, shaken. “Va fa Napoli.”

“Go to Naples?” Jesse repeats in English, startled. “Or, hang on…”

“It’s like…get out of town, that’s wild,” Paola says. “Figurative.”

Jesse shudders. “Do you ever get the sense the universe is trying to tell you something? But you end up feeling like an idiot because you can’t figure out what the message is, like…why these images, why this place? It’s not part of my story, it’s part of someone else’s, why?”

“Kind of?” Paola replies, grinning. “I’ve felt like that since meeting your adoptive parents. I know so much confidential information at this point, Talamasca-sourced and otherwise, that they probably should’ve killed me by now. But Armand’s got guilt around that, huh?”

    Summary

Hesitantly, Lestat inclines his head and admits, “I want to postpone it.”

Louis frowns at him, squeezing his hand tighter. “Which part, exactly?”

“Every part,” Lestat says, flipping his phone face-down. “The single, the album, the documentary, the tour. I shouldn’t do this when…”

“When what?” Louis asks, his frown deepening in concern. There’s no sign of anger in his expression, which is a relief. Just consternation.

“There’s a shitshow on my doorstep,” Lestat says punchily, pointing toward the open doors leading into a wide, drafty hall that echoes with Gabrielle’s and Jesse’s voices. “One that I agreed to, for all my sins,” he continues, “and that you agreed to as well, God knows why.”

“Marius hasn’t been holding up his end of the bargain with the kid, has he,” Louis says under his breath, his eyes darkening as he casts his gaze askance. “Hasn’t done a damned thing in three weeks except work on the mural. Why do you think he’s stalling? Suspicious?”

“Jesse’s going to have to take some renewed initiative, I think,” Lestat replies, put-upon, “or I could march back there and take away his brushes.”

“If you’re having second thoughts,” Rashid says patiently, squeezing Sam’s hand as he keeps pace, “we don’t have to go there tonight.”

“I promised,” Sam replies, determined. “No sense in running any longer. I’m here, and it’ll be easier to face it with you than without.”

“You haven’t been anywhere near the site since the fire,” Rashid realizes abruptly.

“I’ve been nowhere near it in decades,” Sam confirms, nodding his head in defeat.

    Summary

    Dearest Danny,

It’s Christmas Eve again, and Hanukkah is ending. I tried to find the courage to call on you at about this time last year. Should say, I suggested it to your father—stubborn son of a bitch that he is, you know how that went. So, I let the matter drop. We didn’t come.

It’s strange that I can sit here and say the only reason I know you’re alive is through the lives of others. Friday mornings, like clockwork, I have a ritual. Drive the hour and a half from Modesto to San Francisco. Sometimes, it takes longer. Parking isn’t easy to find, but if I have to walk a mile on Telegraph to get to Caffe Med, I do. Some weeks, that little paper is sold out, and I don’t get my hands on a copy. But most weeks, I do.

Two years you’ve been gone from my life. That’s what you tell some of the people whose lives you tease from their lips like so much unspooled tape. I try to imagine the hours you must spend in dirty bars, on ill-lit street corners, in strangers’ rented rooms. And from the way they speak, defenseless, open, I imagine you as so much light in all that dark. I remember teaching you compassion, but not this unflinching clarity.

“Give me one reason why I shouldn’t feed you to the rats and then inter your bones without ceremony,” Armand demands, his eyes blazing.

“Because, deep down,” Sam says, meeting Armand’s gaze with last-ditch defiance, “you know I’m the reason our audiences keep coming back.”

At first, Armand looks furious. He opens his mouth a fraction, his eyes flickering, raising one hand in a graceful arc. There’s already a flame in his palm, and Sam’s instinctive response is to meet Armand’s gesture with the same, to show him that he’s not the only one who wields the Fire Gift. Armand glances at the flame in Sam’s hand and then at Sam’s face, tilting his head. He closes his hand, extinguishing the fire.

Sam closes his own hand, shaking from head to foot. “We’ve both broken curfew.”

Armand bites his lip, giving a slow, reluctant nod. “Yes, it would seem we have.”

    Summary

Louis wanders by with a book as Jesse and Gabrielle are gathering the glasses and blood bags, pausing to watch them. “Turning in already?”

Jesse nods, clutching the detritus. “It’s dawn in an hour or so. I doubt Lestat and Marius will be finished in the ballroom before then.”

Setting his book down on the table, Louis takes Jesse’s empty glass and blood bags, shaking his head in a sort of you-fucking-wish attitude when Gabrielle looks teasingly expectant about the fate of his own dinner remnants. “You’ll get lost trying to find the kitchens again. Go to coffin.”

“Bed for me,” Jesse reminds him, offering Louis a tired smile as they turn to go. “Thanks.”

“Is that any way to treat your mother-in-law?” Gabrielle asks Louis wryly, approaching him.

“Don’t see her around right now, do you?” Louis replies with an impressively straight face.

    Summary

Armand gestures helplessly. “Something so precious,” he whispers. “They have never lost each other, and I cannot be the reason they do.”

Taking Armand’s hand, Daniel leads him back toward the villa. “That’s why we’re not splitting them up. Not at any stage, not for any reason.”

Swallowing hard, Armand turns Daniel’s words over in his mind. “I suppose they’ve already taken far greater risks for each other. With each other.”

“Yep,” Daniel agrees, squeezing Armand’s hand. “And do you know what we have in common, everyone in this fucked-up, but familial coven?”

“More things than most of us would care to admit,” Armand mutters, “but humor me. I’d love to hear your take, because it’s undoubtedly unique.”

“None of us are happy unless we’re constantly risking our necks for the idiot we’ve decided, for whatever irrational reason, is our idiot,” Daniel says.
