“Not so much, no. Not this time at least,” Ilya hummed, his hands seeking out Shane’s wrist to feel the pulse thrumming there. “Is fine, though. Not dreaming now, this is very real.”
Ilya’s been seeing Shane’s hard hit in nightmares. They talk about it.

Still he fought back, hands wrapping around a scaled neck. The creature wore no clothes, but he could see it had the same anatomy as Jaskier had. Webbed hands and feet, scales covering pale flesh. They weren’t the beautiful blue, however, but rather the color of old blood. He moved to grab for the potion in his pocket to make up for the water he had taken into his lungs- but the vial was gone. It had to have slipped out when he’d been pulled under.
Just as sharp teeth snapped inches from his face, Geralt was crashed into from the side. Knocked away from the rusty scales and black eyes.
“Stop,” a voice snarled- yet, it wasn’t muffled by the water that filled Geralt’s ears. “This one is mine.”

Rozanov cocks his head to the side curiously. “This is porn thing?”
“It isn’t a porn thing!”
“It feels different?” He asks, nosing along his throat. “For you?”
“I don’t know, but I don’t think so.” Psychologically, yes; physically, probably not. He hadn’t felt whatever Rozanov had clearly felt the moment the condom broke. “Though I think it’ll feel different for you. Maybe better.”
Rozanov pulls away until they can look each other in the eye.
“I always feel good with you.” It doesn’t feel like a compliment, but like he’s making a point. “You don’t need to do this for me.”
“I know. I want to do it.” Shane insists.
Shane and Ilya experiment. It's a success.

Summary
Shane had truly believed that the worst was behind them.
Mostly because his barometer for ‘worst’ had been recalibrated from a weighted mass of worry lodged in the base of his throat about league reactions, and the strain of hiding his heart, rewritten in an instant where he'd known that the worst was actually a notification bubble in a corner where it never showed, next to a name that taught Shane what it was worth to be alive at all; that opened up and spelled terror and the end of the whole goddamn world—but then it wasn't. They didn't end. Shane didn't lose. They made it through the worst.
Surely that meant everything would be okay moving forward, since they'd already survived the worst.

Or: Shane genuinely does believe they've made it through the storm, that the worst came for them and they walked out okay. Breathing. Alive. Together.
Shane—waiting for his fiancé in a hotel room, watching the man he loves more than life collapse on the ice in high definition, the light vanishing from his eyes, the feed cutting just before a crash cart descends upon him—
Shane realizes swiftly—painfully—that he was really fucking wrong.
