Matt turned toward him and the light from the window bleached out the worst of his bruising. He tilted his head very slowly to the right, then sighed and cautiously levered himself up so he was sitting properly.

In fairness: were Eddie in his right mind at the present moment, he’d likely have made out more of the conversations layering on top of one another, all at varying degrees of very-loud and increasingly-anxious and particularly-outraged, getting louder and vaguely more coherent as human speech the further he walked. He’d probably have put together some context, at least.
As it happens, though: Eddie hears some stray words and makes zero sense of them, not least because he thinks his heart might be in real danger of ripping its valves or something given the way it’s thrashing because Eddie, right now?
Is absolutely fucking terrified.
He drove close enough to the mall to get an idea of why he’s here. He’d thought the lights were fucking fireworks, until he got nearer to…

Shane had truly believed that the worst was behind them.
Mostly because his barometer for ‘worst’ had been recalibrated from a weighted mass of worry lodged in the base of his throat about league reactions, and the strain of hiding his heart, rewritten in an instant where he'd known that the worst was actually a notification bubble in a corner where it never showed, next to a name that taught Shane what it was worth to be alive at all; that opened up and spelled terror and the end of the whole goddamn world—but then it wasn't. They didn't end. Shane didn't lose. They made it through the worst.
Surely that meant everything would be okay moving forward, since they'd already survived the worst.

Or: Shane genuinely does believe they've made it through the storm, that the worst came for them and they walked out okay. Breathing. Alive. Together.

"The best treatment?" Barrett's humored reply flew past Roz.
"Ah yes. They called him. My sweetheart. He's coming. He's, what do you call it? Prince shining?"
"Prince in shining armor." Cliff filled in automatically, confusion causing the words to come out slow and stilted.
Immediately, Roz's big grin reappeared. "Yes. Yes! Mine. He's coming. Nurse said she called."
"Oh my god." Barrett looked like he had been the one hit. Cliff sympathized with the situation.
"Sweetheart?" Bood seemed to be torn between shock and laughter. "Your sweetheart?"
"Hmm." Roz grinned wild, gaze sweeping between all of them sporadically. "From Montreal. Long drive, but he should be here soon. Nurse called." Again the repeat.
"The nurse called?" Hayes's question was also slow, almost as if he himself was processing the crazy situation before them as he spoke. "Your emergency contact, you mean?"
Roz lit up at that. "Yes. That's the stupid word. My emergency contact."
"Emergency contact, Prince in shining armor. Same thing." The mumbled reply from Bood. Cliff could see his shoulders shaking as the man held himself back.
"Montreal." Something rang true in Cliff's memory. "Wait a second. Roz, what about your Montreal girl? Jane?" Cliff hadn't thought of her in months, but something was not lining up here. How were the two connected?
That question generated a big heave of laughter from Rozanov. "Ah. Marlow. Montreal girl. Yes." He rolled his head to the side so that they were making eye contact. "They got no idea." Roz's voice tilted, losing some of his accent with a sing-song tone.
