Prof. Jaskier Pancratz never did too well in the love department. Medieval literature, yes. Songwriting and playing his mandolins, also yes. Having passionate, raunchy one-night stands, absolutely. But romance? True romantic love? Not his strongsuit. It was hard when certain attributes he had, things he couldn't change, had in the past made him unloveable.
Mr. Radovid Strogi has been going through the ringer for years. His family was gone, and he up and left everything to become a part time instructor at the University of Oxenfurt. He thought for sure that his life must be cursed when he ran into a literature professor with his coffee, spilling it all over the other man's tastefully unbuttoned shirt on the first day. But for some inexplicable reason, Professor Pancratz kept stopping by his office to talk.
Which could mean nothing.

Jaskier has yet to stay with him in bed; as soon as they finish, he’s gone, taking care of himself, leaving the place next to Geralt cold and empty. He’d lie, if he said, that it doesn’t hurt.
Geralt thinks, they’re in love. Jaskier thinks, they’re just sleeping together.

After Jaskier starts travelling with him, the words Geralt hears to describe him become kinder, and he hears himself referred to as the white wolf, more than the butcher.
The same cannot be said for Jaskier. When at first it was lovely, pretty, songbird, now the words to describe the bard are of an entirely different nature.---000---
During their first summer on the path Geralt hears Jaskier referred to as loud, obnoxious, and once - rather unkindly- as a chatty little bitch. Which Geralt finds he can somewhat understand, especially in those moments where he needs just a little peace and quiet. It’s mostly when he finishes the more difficult hunts, potions still raging through his bloodstream, his senses just a bit too sharp for comfort. Jaskier’s voice isn’t grating, it’s rather lovely, in fact. But in those moments, Geralt just wants to growl at him and tell him to be quiet.
He never calls the bard a chatty little bitch though.

“Can’t afford it,” Geralt grunted.
“It’s not that expensive to rent a bed -” Jaskier started.
It stings to have it pushed in his face that his life isn’t normal, so far beyond normal that someone like Jaskier can’t fathom it.
“It’s expensive to rent a private room,” Geralt couldn’t keep the snarl out of his voice. “Or do you think anyone wants to sleep near a witcher?”
When Geralt meets Jaskier in Posada, he is jaded, bitter and so lonely some days he thinks he might kill him. Jaskier is young, bright, and not afraid of tarnishing his reputation by standing by a witcher.
Years later, Geralt repays the kindness.
