Carmy is conscious of how short his blond hair has been cut, of the smoke that surrounds him from the grill and the cross that sits underneath the collar of his white cotton shirt: he cannot believe that this is happening here. The steaks are so fucking unimportant then.
“What are you doing here?” she says, cornered even in the flung out summer, her face filling with confusion for a long moment.
“This is my house,” he says with a slow blink, and then he shakes his head and motions with his chin. “What is that?”
