She watched them all get worse. Rachel was hot-tempered and angry, and her anger was starting to become explosive. But Jake and Marco had been made vindictive by the suffering of their families, and they both had a cruel streak they were steadily losing the ability to curb. Cassie knew she and Tobias had done their fair share of manipulation, duplicitous when 'there was no other choice'. And Ax was Ax, brought up and bred in this environment of war, and all of those evils had been taught to him from a young age.
Still, Cassie had hoped to preserve something within them all. Something normal, something gentle.
Why did that seem impossible now?

Harpae has to cover every mirror in the house. She can no longer see what they reflect, and so she does not know what Lisette fears when she shatters them to pieces. "Why are you so afraid, Lisette? You sick girl. What are you so afraid of?" But Lisette only laughs in her face and tells her she might as well shove the shards in her eyes, carve them out, because she's never seen. She refuses to see that they've already lost. The sun will never return.

His own voice surprises him with how hushed it has gone, but he can’t even pretend that he minds: it’s not every day that a man is seen for what he is, even if his witness despises the sight of it – of him. Aerion reaches down and burrows a nail into the delicate crease of his own wrist, dragging it up until he can feel the skin break. He patiently coats his palm with the blood dripping out and presses it to the knight’s parted lips, insisting even as he leans back and tries to evade him. He’ll never get tired of this, he suspects; of being inevitable. “See? A dragon can only ever be made of fire.”
