Summary
Ritual magic is powerful, and always requires a sacrifice. Lily Potter goes missing for several days in October of 1979, and when she shows back up, clearly obliviated, and the taboo curse on Voldemort's name is back in place, she and most of the rest of the Order suspect that she played a sacrificial role in the ritual that placed the curse upon the country. Nine months later, she and her husband welcome their son, Harry James Potter, into the world, and a year and three months after that she and her husband are murdered by the man they suspected to be their son's biological father.
Or: Harry James Potter grows up in Little Whinging, and is friends with the snakes in his Aunt's garden. He isn't quite sure how that spiraled into him being simultaneously hailed as a wizarding savior and the next dark lord, becoming the youngest Lord in Wizarding Britain in three centuries, his dad not being his biological father, and his biological father being out to kill him, but here he is.
