Like how his perfectly blank expression revealed every previous emotion on his face to be nothing more than a painted mask for others to see, now even that blank canvas was stripped away to show what was truly underneath - a black despair, fathomless beyond mortal comprehension, resembling nothing so much as that crawling void she had glimpsed a lifetime ago at the heart of Hell.
“I…can’t,” Lucifer said simply.
And then he was gone. No flicker of magic or flash of a portal. Just gone.
