Summary
October of 1982 brings fleeting leaves skidding across the streets of Hurricane, Utah; and for the Emily twins, a twelfth birthday. What happened in spring still weighs heavy on him, but Michael Afton knows that his best friend’ll never let him stay down. As long as Charlie was there, everything would be fine.
A year later, a now fourteen-year old Michael can’t meet gazes with the Puppet’s ever watchful eye. Not after what happened. Everything is too much now: school, family, friends. The worst part? It all would’ve been fine if his stupid brother had just told someone. But he had a plan. Silence. Hungry, carnivorous—or maybe cavernous, vast and lined with teeth, ready to bite. The quiet before the storm, the gasped breath in before the heart stops. Tragedy tastes bitter. Blood tastes like pennies. Both are in the air, promises coating the tongue. Something bad is about to happen.
From beneath the bed, something reaches out—a mass of darkness, a shapeless nothing—and it grabs Mike by the wrist, yanks him forward. Mike chokes on a yelp and flails his arm free, blood dripping from where the shadows grabbed him, like the touch of darkness has split him open. He tries to scramble away, unfolds his legs to kick himself back but only makes himself easier, more vulnerable. The unidentifiable mass encircles Mike's ankle, and he screams something agonized, terrified—and then it pulls Mike, clawing at the carpet with his bloodied fingers, under the bed.
This time, the silence isn't hungry. It's satisfied.
will starts entering the mindscape in his dreams on the same night that mike gets taken by vecna. this is probably the least confusing part of everything that happens after.

Summary
The Christmas of ‘86 is drawing nigh.
With the Byers-Hopper family finally visiting Hawkins and the Upside-Down seemingly under wraps, it looks like for the first time since ‘82, it’s going to be a truly happy holiday. Now all Mike needs to do is wrap presents, host guests, and keep Will from finding out about his feelings.
If only he wasn’t so distracted by a sudden onslaught of headaches and ultra-realistic nightmares…

Summary
Steve huffs begrudgingly. He doesn’t really want to spend his Tuesday and Thursday nights watching some random kid, but arguing with his mom when she’s already made up her mind is like trying to stop a freight train with brute force. “Okay. I’ll do it.”
Tuesday comes far, far too fast.
Steve pulls up to the Byers’ house just after five, the late September sun transforming almost everything in Hawkins into shades of orange. The house is strikingly small, set back from the road with a cluttered yard and a worse for wear front porch. It certainly isn’t the place Steve usually finds himself, and he feels weirdly conspicuous as he gets out of his mom’s car. He realizes, he’s never really seen the shitty part of Hawkins too much. A small surge of rare gratefulness rushes through him.Or, when Steve takes on the job of babysitting a young Will Byers, his life changes in some various unpleasant ways.

Because on top of everything else—his brother disappearing and turning up dead, his mother losing her god damn mind, Nancy convincing him his mother might have a point, some fucking portal in the woods opening up to another fucking dimension, Steve fucking Harrington calling him a screw up and a queer, at least two of his fingers feeling broken, and the handcuffs digging into his wrists during the uncomfortable ride in the backseat of a police car—he’s got a fucking boner.
