He lets out a small groan and she turns to see him slowly sitting up and rubbing at his eyes trying to rid them of sleep.
She turns to him and offers a small smile, spatula in hand. ‘Morning.’
JJ blinks at her a couple times, his hand comes up to run through his already tousled hair, his eyes focus onto her and Kie can’t quite figure out what makes his eyes slightly widen and his mouth fall when they do.
‘Holy shit,’ he breathes out.
Her first thought is that he sounds shocked, the next is crap, did he not remember last night? He hadn’t seemed drunk, but she can’t be sure. Maybe she’s just created an insanely awkward situation where he hasn’t seen her in two years and all of a sudden he wakes up and she’s in his kitchen making breakfast.
‘You really are pregnant,’ he continues.

After finding out she’s pregnant, for reasons even she doesn’t quite understand herself, Kie goes to JJ. Throughout the months of her pregnancy her and JJ fall into comfortable and entirely platonic domesticity that will in no way result in them falling in love.- Language:

He swerves instinctively, and he sees the tree coming, headed straight for him. He means to swerve back onto the road, he really does, but his arms don’t seem to work, and his heart is frozen and empty, and he’s alone and he’s broke and—
There are too many excuses to make before he collides with the tree. So he just closes his eyes and braces for impact.
His vision turns white as the airbags explode. A whiff of gasoline. A flicker of flames—close, too close. And then everything is black.
OR
JJ racks up some serious medical debt, and naturally the only solution is to find El Dorado.

She says, “I’ve missed you.” And she’s not exactly sure what she means by it, but the words feel right as they spill from her clumsy mouth.
His brows slant over his eyes, he sucks in a breath. Kie thinks she might have ruined everything. God, if only she could keep her mouth shut.
But then he softens. Says, “I’m right here, Kie. Always been right here.”

And okay, JJ Maybank is not exactly a stranger, but they’ve spoken approximately three times in the six months she’s been working here. Enough that she knows his name is JJ Maybank, that he mostly hangs out here because he’s good friends with Cleo, and that he will lend you his zippo lighter when you’re sharing cigarettes in the back alley, but will keep his eyes on you like a hawk until you give it back.
That’s nowhere near enough for him to ask her what time she gets off so casually, and certainly not enough for him to call her babe.

JJ fumbled with the zippo, the flame licking at his fingers when he dropped it, not bothering to search for it when it tumbled into the long grass. The boy looked up at Kie from under the brim of his hat, his eyes surprised and his lips parted. He still held the unlit joint in his hand, unmoving.
He cleared his throat before he answered, kept his eyes on her and wondered if it was a trick question. But the girl looked serious, her brown eyes on his and her mouth set in a thin line. Kie raised her brows at him.
“Well?” She prompted.
“With the way you argue?” JJ smirked, “I can only imagine.”
Or, five times JJ and Kie kissed and told themselves it didn’t mean anything and one time they couldn’t lie anymore.

“C’mon, Rocky, let’s get you properly cleaned up.”“Jay, I’m fine,” she told him tiredly and she ignored how Sarah scoffed. She pulled at her shirt the same way John B had done, jerked when the fabric stuck to the drying blood that stained her side.
JJ laughed humourlessly, flashed his teeth at her in a grin that showed no mercy. “Like hell you are, Kie, now move before I make you.”
Kie gets herself into a fight and JJ is there to patch her up, of course. In fact, JJ's the only one she'll let help her. A collection of JJ and Kiara patching each other up after their daily disasters.

“What do you have?” he says conversationally to Kie, who is staring at the two of them and every point of contact between them with steadily growing realisation.

Summary
The world goes black for a few seconds. How did this happen? Has Kiara really been so self absorbed to have missed something like this? Big John’s gone missing. Possibly died at sea, at this point. Her best friend’s dad, the same Big John that made them popcorn when they watched movies at the Chateau, that let her crash on the pull-out when it got too late to drive home, that always smiled when he saw her.
When Big John disappears at sea, Kiara has to come to terms with the childhood friendships that she has let go of since the beginning of high school.
Just my take on the post-Kook Year reckoning we all know must have happened.

It’s not the same with JJ. She can’t explain it, nor does she know how. But something had always been different about him. It wasn’t like how it was with John B, or with Pope. There had always been something unspoken between them, something unsaid. And for the most part, it was easy enough to ignore; there were rules, a million and one reasons why things between them could be different but never allowed to live. As long as it remained this intangible thing, it couldn’t hurt either of them.
But the gold had changed everything. John B was gone, and so was Sarah, and she had kissed Pope and the only thing she had been thinking while her lips were against his was, “I want this to be JJ. Why do I want this to be JJ?"
