    Summary

Shane's eyes squeeze closed again. “We had reason to put rules in place. Protocol. If ever—if it got to a place where, if he was ever feeling like he might—"

Hayden’s body understands before his mind catches up. His blood runs cold for a second, stuck on the scrunch of Shane’s face, the clench of his fist, how desperate he’d been to see Rozanov—Ilya—just now. To make sure that he was okay. Here, in person.

    Not hurt. Alive.

“Oh,” Hayden hears himself say distantly. “Oh, fuck, Shane.”

    --

or, Ilya needs a place to go, and Hayden's happens to be the closest. It turns out to be a good thing.

    Summary

In late 2012 when Shane has a meltdown and frantically tells them to call Lily, for the first time Yuna’s ever witnessed, Shane is coaxed out of one of them instead of just suffering through until the exhaustion wins out instead—and all by some mysterious, apparently very well attuned to Shane, 'Lily'.

She hadn’t meant to see the number before she’d pressed it and fumbled the phone up to Shane’s ear. It was simply a byproduct of the situation, something Shane had asked for her to do.

…Memorizing it and then texting that number to thank Lily for their help was not something she’d been asked to do. But she worries so much about Shane, and Lily is a reassurance. Not a pry for details but the simple, verifiable confirmation: he’s okay.

Lily, on the other hand, very much enjoys being able to make oddly specific 'your mother' jokes to Shane much more often now. (And maybe the whole family piece of it, too.)

Someone in John’s staff sells his diaries to the press in the 70s. They’re printed in the papers. They contain his feelings about Paul. They are him pining over Paul. Paul reads them.

    Summary

Then Rozanov turns, his side profile on full display, and Shane can see now that it’s not his phone he’s cradling in his hands but an unlit cigarette and a flickering lighter.

Shane is suddenly unsure of his next move. If he announces himself, he can perhaps get this introduction over with before the stick ever gets lit. And then, of course, there’s always the option of turning around completely, heading back inside like he was never even here. But when else will he get the chance to meet Rozanov alone, privately, without a crowd of hungry journalists eager to hear their first exchange and weigh in on their microexpressions and tones and the unspoken messages in their words?

What he absolutely cannot do is be within three metres of Ilya Rozanov smoking a cigarette because there are some embarrassments you never come back from, and suffering a spontaneous nosebleed while introducing himself to the Russian opponent he’s never met before is unequivocally one of them.

    Or:

Shane Hollander has a strange affliction: cigarette smoke gives him nosebleeds. Needless to say, this makes interacting with Ilya Rozanov more difficult than he'd previously imagined.

    Summary

“Jesus, took you long enough,” John says, adjusting the duffle over his shoulder. “Thought I might be out here til morning at this rate.”

For a second he wonders if he’s drunker than he thought, but no. As far as he can tell, it is still 1980, and he hasn’t seen or so much as spoken to John in ten years.

Or, John comes to stay with Paul in Scotland to ride out the press storm of his divorce to Yoko, and Paul learns to stop running away.
