Summary
“For the gallery owner,” Lycaon says, presenting the box with a slight bow, “on the opening of his most ambitious art exhibition to date.”
Hugo crosses his arms, unimpressed. “That excuse would be more convincing if I was one of the artists presenting my artwork at this show.”
Still, Hugo knows what this is. They didn't celebrate his birthday either when they were younger, at Hugo’s own request; after the first birthday Hugo weathered since Jack took him in, Lycaon stopped pestering him about it. Yet, Lycaon always found subtle ways to mark the occasion, by gifting him small tokens under various excuses, some more reasonable than others.
It seems some things don’t change, even with the intervening years of estrangement between them.
“All right,” Hugo acquiesces, and gestures at Lycaon to open the box for him. “Impress me.”
(Hugo doesn't care to celebrate his birthday; he'd prefer if everyone treated it as just another day of the year. Even so, his trusted companions still find ways to show their regard and appreciation for him.
Hugo spends a day with Robin and Vivian, with Lycaon, and with a precious memory of the past).

Summary
“Hugo.” Lycaon doesn’t even have the decency to sound winded, although it means the frustration is all the more obvious in his voice. He stops several paces away, further than their usual preference, obviously wary of spooking Hugo into fleeing once more. “Stop fucking running.”
“I already stopped,” Hugo points out. “Otherwise, you wouldn’t even be able to catch my shadow.”
Lycaon’s eyes flash with ire, but after a moment, he backs down. When he speaks again, the previous hesitance is back. “Then… can we talk?”
“What’s there to talk about?” Hugo says. “Jack was very clear. He doesn’t trust me. And you obviously agree.”
“I do trust you—”
“Because your silence was so convincing.”
Lycaon opens his mouth, but no words emerge.
Hugo smiles. It feels overstretched on his lips, stiff and unnatural. “Like so,” he says softly, and takes a step backward.
(A canon divergence story set during Hugo and Lycaon's youth, in which Hugo overhears the entire conversation between Jack and Lycaon in that small attic.
Only this time, Lycaon realizes that Hugo was there, and that he heard everything).

Summary
Hugo’s resentment at Lycaon’s decision to leave Mockingbird, his hatred towards his father, the fear as he sat at Lycaon’s side, waiting – for either help to come, or for Lycaon’s heartbeat to fade away – all of that has been smothered by sheer exhaustion, leaving Hugo numb and empty.
Without his emotions getting in the way, Hugo’s thoughts are startlingly clear.
Betrayals and abandonment, secrets and broken promises – none of those matter. All that matters is Lycaon, and who he is to Hugo.
His dearest partner, now turned his greatest traitor.
And yet—
—still his, always.
(Their confrontation after the failed assasination attempt on the Ravenlock family head is not the last time Hugo sees Lycaon; before they go their separate ways, Hugo makes several arrangements that, years later, will influence his reunion with Lycaon and set the stage for future collaborations.

Quiet settles around them, but this quiet holds a weight within it.
Dan Heng knows it. He has become acquainted with it, from the hours he’d spent watching over Jing Yuan at Belobog’s History and Culture Museum, standing before a photograph and a memory from centuries past.
And so, he waits.
When Jing Yuan finally speaks, it’s with a softness that barely stirs the silence around them.
“I have many regrets – a given for any member of a long-life species, although I do my best not to dwell on them.”

Jing Yuan's gaze is fixed firmly on Dan Heng’s face, as if he’s searching for some kind of reaction. “Are you all right?”
Dan Heng turns away. “There is more scrutiny on you than ever before. I know the Marshal is investigating you—” He lets out a quiet hiss through his teeth. There’s a growing buzz in his ears, shivering under his skin like a violin string wound far too tight. “You made sure that you met us only in the other generals’ presence before this; considering how I was in the Shackling Prison when Hoolay escaped, you definitely should not be seen alone with me now either.”
“Dan Heng.” There’s a note in Jing Yuan’s voice that Dan Heng can’t ignore, and just like the sun inexorably draws all within its vicinity into its gravity, Dan Heng finds himself turning towards Jing Yuan, looking over his shoulder to meet Jing Yuan’s unwavering gaze. “Are you all right?”
(In the aftermath of the revolt at the Shackling Prison, Dan Heng attempts to process the chaos of the day, and Jing Yuan takes a moment to check on Dan Heng.
